Netbooks are a popular, cheaper alternative to full size notebook and desktop computers. While some netbooks ship with Linux, most consumers are opting for Windows XP-based netbooks. What makes a netbook different from a notebook or desktop computer? The primary difference is size – netbooks fall somewhere between the smallest notebook computers and a large smartphone. Netbooks are also less powerful PCs – to reduce the cost. As a result most netbooks can’t run Windows Vista and ship with Windows XP (and in a few cases Linux). To save even more money some consumers install OpenOffice instead of Microsoft Office. Netbooks are available from many manufacturers including Acer, Asus, HP, MSI, Dell, OLPC (One Laptop Per Child), Medion, Kohjinsha, Lenovo, Toshiba and others.
Netbooks have even caught the attention of Google – the search engine company – who are working with computer manufacturers on a next generation netbook based on Google’s Android platform. And Microsoft is looking for Windows 7 as its sequel to Windows XP for netbooks.
So where does that leave consumers? Should you race out and buy a netbook today with Windows XP or wait until later this year or 2010 for the Android / Windows 7 based netbooks? Or should I instead pay a bit more (likely $100 – $150) and get a full-size notebook?
Here are some things to think about:
Speed – if you are planning to run anything beyond email, basic Internet browsing and basic text document creation you should get a laptop; for the basics a netbook is good enough. And pretty much forget about gaming on a netbook – and likely most high quality Internet video.
Power Typer- if you are power typer take some time to type on a netbook in a store – are you really going to put up with the smaller keyboard? If you are just tapping out Twitter updates or email messages you’ll be fine – but if you are writing your next novel the netbook’s smaller keyboard might be frustrating.
Vista Experience: if you like or are used to the Windows Vista experience, look and feel and features then you only have two choices – get a full-size notebook now or wait until Windows 7 enabled netbooks come out later… and heres a catch – Windows 7 may be limited to basics for netbook use (details from Microsoft still pending).
Compatibility: Linux-based netbooks have pretty much disappeared from the shelves of retailers because Linux doesn’t allow you to run popular applications like Microsoft Office. Google’s Android-based netbooks will likely have the same restriction. So if you use Microsoft Office at all stay clear of netbooks that aren’t running a Windows-based operating system (for now that means XP, later this year Windows 7).
One thing that isn’t different are problems. At support.com we deal with thousands of computer problems every day including netbook and laptop problems.
Netbook computers can be affected by the same problems as a full-size notebook or desktop computer. Because netbooks aren’t as powerful, anything impacting computer performance (like a virus or spyware, or too many installed programs) will be even more noticeable.
Common problems include:
Slow startup and/or shutdown time
Frequent crashes or lockups
Help getting printers and other devices / peripherals to work
Problems upgrading netbook BIOS to the latest version
USB devices are not accessible after being plugged in
Problems transferring data to my used computer
Unable to synchronize an iPod, iPhone, Treo, Centro, Windows Mobile or other portable device
Problems accessing media content (pictures, videos, music) in Windows Media Player
Windows Update errors preventing the latest security updates from being applied
Errors with Flash, Java / Javascript, ActiveX
Help connecting a used computer to a home network
Frequent pop-ups and/or warnings that my PC is infected with a virus
No audio or choppy audio / sound problems
Problems installing and configuring anti-virus / anti-spyware software
CD-ROM drive unavailable error
My advice is don’t jump out and buy a netbook just because it is $100 – $150 cheaper – it may be a great deal if you are the right kind of user. Take the time to really use a netbook in a store, understand how you will use it at home and make sure you can live with the limitations. If you can, netbooks are a great deal – if you can’t, you’ll just be returning the netbook and, at some stores, paying a restocking fee.

Can I install the grub bootloader onto my laptop from ubuntu live cd without an installation of linux?
Can I install the GRUB Bootloader from an Ubuntu Linux Live CD without already having Linux installed or having to install Linux?
If not, is there a way to install just the Windows Bootloader from a disk or another bootloader from a disk to my laptop?
(Its because i deleted my ubuntu install which had GRUB and now when i turn it on it just comes up with “Error 17″ in grub)
If you don’t have a linux os on your computer it may not help to install grub.
You can install the windows bootloader.
You did not say if you are using xp or vista.
The first 2 links are for xp the last link is for vista.
Good luck
Buddhist says: “erotic” is empty, empty is “erotic”. To understand the old and new, we can also think of so: new is old, old is new. Especially, there is a more popular saying: Having a kind of old callednew.
Throughout the things related to Apple, whether how old they are, they will be the new things and be popular. Last week, Apple campany had a public auction with its products, the first Apple computer. And the auction price are as high as 240 thousand US Dollars. So, Supply-batteries.co.uk think it will be valued one million in the coming later.
Besides the oldest Apple computer, there were few newly Apple products appeared in last week, but all are “miraculous”. Prepared for children’s 7 inches Apple tablet PC, also have the solar power Apple tablet PC for students. More ever, there were equiped with Apple a1189 battery Intel core i7 processor 11 inches Apple laptop. In addition, still appeared in last week was dell Streak tablet PC, Supply-batteries.co.uk think the Streak tablet PC’s appear must inspired many Apple fans while m any Apple fans are waitting in everybody desperate for white Apple iPhone4.
Coming back to talk about the oldest Apple computer which Batteries-home.com valued for Million dollars
It was reported, Apple computer company auctioned its first Apple computer, the first Apple-1 computer which launched in 1976, and the auction place was London christies americas. APPLE PowerBook G4 Series (DVI) Battery. The begin price was 150 thousand pounds (About 240 thousand US dollars).
Apple-1 computer.
It is actually wooden processed Apple-1 computer were began to sell in July 1976, only selled 200 Apple-1 computers. Living to now Apple-1 computers are very few. The price in the year of 1976 was 666.66 US dollars, and it was said the another apple founder like repeat numbers, sold to local shop price was $500, add 1/3 of the price(500 dollars) was obtained 666.66 US dollars.
Apple-1.
The original version of the apple-1 computer Besided the Apple-1 the primitive components, the customers would get original packing, user manual and Steve Jobs’ signatured letter primitive components, including motherboard, 6502 microprocessor, www.laptop-battery-charger.net printed circuit boards, capacitor, heatsink, 8Kb memory, etc.
Apple’s two founders
Although Apple-1 computer without screen, the buyers also had to bought one and assembled by themselves. But Apple-1 computer is the originator of iPod, iPad, APPLE PowerBook G4 Series (15-inch Titanium) Battery, iPhone and other Apple products. For many young consumer, Apple-1 computer is new things, this oldest Apple computer is the oldest new products. Apple computer company only launched 200 Apple-1, and retained since no more than 15 sets, www.supply-batteries.co.uk maintained to today and can work normally were much rarer. This also may be the reason of patted so high price, of course, essentially reason is Apple product continuous success, for example, Apple laptop, Apple ipod, iphone, ipad.

What’s a good simple program/application to run to Test a computer (apple laptop) that I might buy?
I might buy a Macbook Pro 2.2Ghz core 2 duo off someone and I’m wondering if there is some Apple-made OS X app that I can easily download and run quickly while checking out his computer.
Is there any easy and quick way to make sure his computer passes hardware tests? So I don’t buy it and find out in a couple days?
Thanks
i dont think there is but try going to an apple store or a bestbuy or other store that sells computers

Laptop Battery Battle: Apple Macbook Pro Vs Acer, Dell, Toshiba And Others
The once-cavernous gulf between laptops and desktop PCs has never been narrower. Laptops now offer the sort of power that was a mere pipe dream a couple of years ago, and they’re beginning to rival desktops in their versatility as well.
One of the key buying criteria is battery life, which is a topic subject to some controversy over the way battery life is advertised.
In the latest issue of PC Authority (September 2009) we’ve bench tested 10 of the world’s biggest and best laptops, including a battery benchmark test. This includes Apple’s famed MacBook Pro, Dell’s Studio XPS 16, Acer’s Aspire 8930G, and a Toshiba Qosmio G50-127.
So how did they stack up?
How we tested
We run two battery life tests. For our light-use test, we run a simple timer application until the battery runs out, and for the intensive test we push the processor to its limit with our multitasking benchmark. This gives us a minimum and maximum battery life. We use the battery settings most suited to longevity and performance. For simplicity, where laptops have dual graphics, we’ve only graphed the “stamina” times for light use and “speed” times for heavy use.
Lenovo’s X301 was a clear performer in both battery benchmarks. Also interesting were the results achieved on the MacBook Pro under Mac OS X with higher powered nVidia graphics enabled.
To see the rest of the reviews, including how the laptops stacked up in terms of features, performance, and value for money, see the September 2009 issue of PC Authority magazine, which is on sale now.

My CD-RoM cannot see some CD-s, but others yes, why is this?
At first I thought it was that it only accepts CDs made on that specific computer, but it sees some others too, like cd-s from magazines and from others computers written(but not all).
Before this problem started it used to see all CDs, but since a month it got picky about CDs. I noticed when I burned a CD on my laptop and when I put it into my other pc, it says ERROR DRive D, and when I enter ”MY Computer” the drive D appears empty.
PLEASE HELP!!!! WHATS GOING ON WITH MY PC, IS IT BROKEN FOR GOOD OR CAN I FIX IT BY CLICKING SOMETHING…?
I tried other CDs so the phenomennon happens with about half of them( i tried 12 CDs).
Oh, and those that are invisible to it do work fine on other computers, so the problem is not with the CDs.
For a while it didnt see my USb connected photo camera as well, but today that worked, and I didnt do anything differently than before.
Without a few more details like your OS, programs, etc, it’s a bit tricky, but I’ll float a couple of guesses anyway.
First off, you make mention of burning a CD with your laptop, and then getting an error on your desktop, so my guess is that the burning program on your laptop isn’t “finalizing” the discs and/or doesn’t have error-checking enabled.
Secondly, since you say that your CD-ROM on your desktop sees some but not all, and assuming the burning program on your laptop is finalizing the CDs, you might want to try running a CD/DVD “lens cleaner” (exact wording varies by brand) Phillips, Recoton, Maxell, are among many. Get one, follow the enclosed directions, and run it two or three cycles. (open and close the tray after it’s finished running)
A third possibility is assuming you have the same burning program on both computers, they may not be the same version, so updates may be a good idea.
Lastly, defrag both computers on a regular basis, and reboot after each defrag.

White bought the Aspire One Netbook (8.9 ???? 1.6 GHz Intel Atom N270 512MB RAM 8 GB hard drive) on 8 September to be used only when traveling – so you’ve probably used a total of 120 hours or so for the past 18 months. I liked it – it’s easy and fast shoes although I know nothing about Linux I was happy with him. However several weeks before using it and found that the first battery was completely dead. Well it’s ok I can buy another battery. But I also have a / Sun Starburst bar form (new position) that prevents me connecting wired and wireless. I googled and found other users with similar problem without a solution. After extensive research I finally Acer contacted via e-mail about this issue the answer is returned warranty has expired and you try to restore the system to original factory settings or contact your evil (paying) for help. I have not received the recovery disc with the original purchase (product shipped from Amazon not third parties) so I think Acer just trying to make you pay more. Since I had great care of your computer and have just gentlely is dubious transactions

Better than expected
I bought this computer primarily to use at school for taking notes and writing papers, but I have been using it for pretty much everything since I got it. It’s faster than I expected (faster than my expensive Piece of C*** HP tablet), but then one of the first things I did when I bought this computer was delete all the unnecessary bloatware. It’s light enough that when I drop it in my backpack I don’t really notice it, and the battery lasts a good 5 hours, sometimes more, which is astonishing since it’s adveritised as good for 2.5. The keyboard was a little strange at first, but now that I’m used to it, my typing has become much faster and more accurate on it’s smaller keys. I bought the copper brown, which is a nice, understated but interesting brown (it’s almost the color of cola, or coffee with a sheen). My only real complaint is that the speakers are underneath the front bottom edge of the computer, so if you are using it as a laptop the sound is muffled. Oh, and also the screen has a fairly large plastic border… I’m sure there’s some mechanical reason for that, but other computers this size have smaller borders with larger screens, and thus are the same total size. I mean, I bought the 8.9 because I wanted a smaller computer, not a smaller screen.
All in all this is a great little computer. Fits perfectly on those tiny college desks with room to spare, hasn’t crashed once in the month I’ve had it, and it’s faster by virtue of XP rather than Vista (I imagine it’ll be even faster once I dump XP entirely and load up Linux). Another interesting note, I was sitting near a girl with a new Eee PC a couple days ago, and we started up at the same time. By the time hers was loaded and ready, I was already knee deep in note-taking and had three other programs open and running. Why, why Acer, did you have to discontinue this terrific little laptop?? Even my SO, who’s a bloodthirsty Mac user, likes this computer.

Still Reliable After 15 Months of Daily Use
Awesome little workhorse of a netbook and still going strong after 15 months of daily use. The light weight and small size is great for taking it everywhere I go. When I need more display room for my work, it’s a snap to connect the Aspire One to a large size monitor using the VGA port. Quiet fan and cool running, long lasting battery. Keep the temp files and reg clean and it will continue to run as fast as the first day it booted up. The price has dropped and I’ll be buying more Aspire Ones for my home network.

One of the best LAPTOPs I’ve ever had.
The manufacturers keep whining that people don’t understand they’re not supposed to think of a netbook as a laptop, but my Acer Aspire One has been the best compact laptop I’ve ever had, much more powerful than my $2500 Sony SR-77 which it effectively replaced for under $400.
I use it as a bedside computer and as my laptop when traveling, and it runs everything I need to (including games like World of Warcraft), has more disk space than I can fill, and if it gets stolen or dropped or something then it’s incredibly cheap to replace so it takes much of the stress out of traveling with an expensive computer.
I’ve had mine for a year and have had no problems with it whatsoever.
Will have no hesitation to get another Acer Aspire the next time I need a small portable computer.

Instead of another Pocket PC, I got a Netbook
After my Pocket PC couldn’t be taken off of life support (aka the battery wouldn’t take a charge anymore, and I couldn’t find a replacement battery for it again.) I decided to get a Netbook instead. All the functions of a Pocket PC with a boat load more. Easy to set up, simple to use, and so lightweight, it fits into my shoulder bag, and small leather back pack. With a mobile wireless it becomes a great portable way to stay connected.
With the SD and expansion slots, it has become my mobile photo lab. Take photographs, review, edit, adjust and upload without having to wait until you come home.
Can play DVD quality AVI files. The screen is a bit reflective out of doors, but a protective screen cover (something I heartily recommend getting) will cut that problem down.
Took a while to get accustomed to the smaller keyboard layout, but that was not a big problem.
My only issue with this was you have to take it into a computer shop to have the memory maxed out. The design for expanding the memory wasn’t well planned out, and an access panel should have been designed into the underside of the netbook.
I also recommend getting the 6 or 9 cell battery to make it well and truly a ‘daily use’ portable, as one of the many complaints of notebook and netbook users is 3 hr battery life.

Use Google Chrome and this machine works great
I have had this for a month now. The keyboard is comfortable and sufficiently big for me (I do have small hands). I have been using touch pad instead of a mouth for years, so I am used to a touch pad.
At the beginning I used Internet Explorer to go online and found it is a bit slow to load. Worse, it freezes at my gmail all the time (unless I switch to html view). However, my friend mentioned to me about Google Chrome and as soon as I switch to that, all becomes fine now and all the webpage loads fast.
I use it when going on trips or in a cafe. I am starting to love it!

Excellent Purchase
Ok so it’s been a week since I’ve had the Acer Aspire 150. Must say, I’m quite impressed. Certainly it’s not infallable, but it has easily found its place. Now I should start by stating the obvious: this is a netbook, not to be confused with a laptop, or in other words it is not a desktop replacement by any means. For those that are looking to use a laptop as their main computer, do not make it a netbook. If you are planning on using this for nothing more than surfing the internet, and other minor tasks such as word processing or playing music, then look no further. The Acer Aspire combines functionality with an affordable price, perfect for the budget minded. Now on to the specs…
Overall, the netbook package is nice, fairly slim (although I’ve seen slimmer). This is a point that will be up to personal preference, as many will complaign about the keys being too close together, or the touchpad being too small; however, my personal observation is that the keys are not significantly smaller, and mine came with a mini-mouse, easily fixing the touchpad problem. The speed is quite average amongst most netbooks with comparable specs. The wireless works quite well; at first I was dropping connection every minute or so, but after visiting the Acer website and updating the driver, it worked fine. The built-in webcam is a nice touch, works great with skype, and the quality isn’t too shabby (obviously not HD quality or anything of the like, but overall quite smooth, better than most I’ve used). The built-in speakers are ok for the size, but headphones would be much better. Battery life is quite good, mine averages 4 hours with use. Start up is quite fast; takes me about 20 seconds to load (without an anti-virus currently installed; I’m sure that will easily slow down performance). Much software had to be removed out the of box (McAfee, 3rd party software, etc), but it was nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be, about 20 minutes of uninstalls, no messing with the registry or the like. XP runs smooth, have yet to try Windows 7, although I’m told it runs fairly well. Office 2007 runs smooth, Word, Excel, OneNote, and all.
It includes 3 USB ports, which fit items fairly snug, but no problems (would have been nice to have a firewire port). The included VGA out is almost vital. The screen has good quality, a little small for thos who are used to larger fonts, but for me works nice. So, all in all, for the price, this item is well worth it. The hardware seems sturdy overall, the size and weight make this ultra-portable, and once again the price just makes it a great purchase.

All it is said to be
I bought this for my wife because she wanted a ‘laptop’ that she could use on her lap without disturbing her pug. [yeah, the dog]
I was looking for something small, light, simple, and with a decent battery life. The first 2 laptops we’ve had to be tethered to an outlet every hour or so.
This little Acer is everything it is cracked up to be. It really is, for everything my wife does on and off line, as fast as our bigger laptops. The battery, even after a couple months of use, *does* last 5 hours. It is light as a feather especially compared to our Dell & HPs with the wide screens.
I thought the size of the screen might bother us as my wife and I are both in our 60s and wear reading glasses. Not so- the screen size wasn’t an issue. I used it daily for a week and never noticed the size of the screen.
The wi-fi hooked up in seconds to the internet and in minutes to my home lan.
The only possible negative to using this as our only laptop is the lack of a cd/dvd. That’s easily solved with a USB player- and then you don’t need to lug around, or power up one on the computer.

I’m looking for a laptop that’s thin, fast, has a nice bright screen, also with backlit keyboard. I will mainly use this for college, and to take around with me, so I need plenty of battery life. I have a desktop at home, so this isn’t a desktop replacement, I just need something else to rely on. Th price needs to be under 1000. I was looking at the ACer Timeline, can anyone reccommend that laptop or an equivalent to it? SOmething better for the price in the market? I’m not prone to brands, but it can’t be a Mac. Need a PC for school.
Get a Dell Studio for like 500-600 bux, an extra battery so you can carry it from class to class with no problems.
Yhe, I know what you mean, Mac sucks with that built in battery, people always standing in line next to the charging station…
