Why doesn’t Walmart sells Macs? (Macbook Pro is what I’m looking to buy)?

It’s so weird. I’ve looked on their website and they sell a few Mac accessories, but absolutely NO Mac computer, desktop or laptop.

Funnier yet, I even asked some of their management, and each one has given me a bit of a different answer. . .so basically, I don’t believe any of them knew for sure. Does anyone have any thought as to why I can get HP, Dell, Acer, Gateway, etc from them but not ONE Mac? Much appreciated!

The way Wal-Mart works is to strong-arm manufacturers to cut the price drastically. Apple must have refused to go along with Wal-Mart’s greedy, rip-off tactics. After all, Apple Computer does not need Wal-Mart and does not need its computers being sold at a deep discount.

For example, if the manufacturer wants to maintain a wholesale price of $1,000, Wal-Mart will demand a price of $750, even if it below cost to the manufacturer. Wal-Mart has driven a number of US business out of business in this manner, and has severely crippled others, such as Rubbermaid, resulting in the loss of many US manufacturing jobs.

In many ways, Wal-Mart is very bad for the US economy, and is more an outlet for cheap Chinese crap than anything else.

I refuse to shop at Wal-Mart.

6 Easy Steps to Choose Personal Laptop

Before buying laptop, there are few things that you need to consider. Like cell phone, laptop has become a necessity in life. It’s definitely a gadget that everyone wishes to have. Choosing a suitable laptop is very important as it is something that you will be using for the next 2-4 years. Nowadays, laptop is about lifestyle, an additional gadget that expresses your style. Therefore choose a laptop that is best described yourself.

First thing that you need to ask yourself, why do you need laptop? Many people use laptop for many different reasons. If you plan to use laptop for surfing the internet, using a 3 years ago laptop will still do the job. If you are graphic designer or gamer, getting a high spec laptop is a must. If you are business person always doing presentation, choose a light laptop and easy to carry around. After you have identified your reason for getting a laptop, you will need to choose a suitable laptop spec.

Processor

This is the heart of the laptop. For casual user, using Intel Dual Core is ideal as its budget friendly. Another alternative is using Intel Atom processor, which is designed for Netbook to surf the internet. If you think you need more processing power where you multitask a lot, choose Intel Core2 Duo with 2Ghz and above.

RAM

This is the memory of the laptop. Getting at least 1GB RAM is pretty standard nowadays. It’s recommended to have 1GB RAM to run Windows XP while 2GB RAM to run Windows Vista. Make sure the laptop RAM can still be upgraded in the future.

Harddisk

This is the storage of the laptop. For standard usage, 80GB of Harddisk should be enough. If you frequently download a lot of songs and movies from the internet, consider to buy 160GB and above.

Weight

Normally people buy laptop because they can go mobile. They can work, chat with friends, send email and surf the internet when they are away from home. Therefore size and weight is an important factor as you will be carrying your laptop around. Netbook usually weight less than 3 pounds. Mid-size laptop (11”-14”) weight 5-7 pounds. For desktop replacement (15”-17”) weight more than 7 pounds.

Price

Choose a laptop base on your budget. Most quality laptops sell below $1000. Most good laptops sell between $450-$600 range. Buying laptop on special occasion is a good idea as you usually get discount or some goodies. When a new laptop model launch in the market, the price of the older model will usually drop. That is also a good time to buy the older laptop model if you are not too particular of getting the latest model.

Recommendation from Friends

Besides checking on the internet articles and reviews, the best place to look for recommendation is from your friends. If they own the laptop that you wish to buy, ask for their opinions. As they have been using the laptop, they can provide you the valuable experience of using the laptop. If the laptop is bad, sure they will complain about it.

Hopefully this article can provide you with some ideas on things to consider before buying laptop. Make a checklist of the points above, get clear on the laptop that you want, and shop for your perfect laptop.

Can you boost Video Ram on a 64mb Ram Laptop?

This question is for my friend, he has 64mb Video Ram on his laptop and needs 128mb Video Ram. Is there any way to increase his Video Ram at all on his laptop? He has Vista.

You cannot boost the RAM but you MIGHT be able to upgrade the video card.

He can only update the video to the best video card available for his computer when it was in production, if he can find one.

He will have to find someone who will crack the laptop open and make the change.

In my shop we would do this for $125 plus the cost of the card if one could be found.

Laptop recognizes Wireless connection, but I don’t have internet access.?

Like the title says.

I installed a Linksys wireless router on my desktop PC, so I can have wireless internet for my Dell Studio laptop. The problem is, the laptop recognizes the network, but I do not have access to the web!

Under Network and Sharing Center in the Control Panel, the diagram shows:
MY PC—–Unidentified Network—X—Internet

What on Earth can I do???

P.S.— I do NOT need a wireless card, the laptop has one built in.

You must configure your wireless network card (on the computer you want to make connection to the router, your card is built in) to the same settings as the router in order to establish a wireless connection to the router. The router and the card in the computer must have the same settings to be able to get together and make a connection.

SSID = An SSID is the name of a wireless local area network (WLAN). All wireless devices on a WLAN must employ the same SSID in order to communicate with each other.

Operating mode: Infrastructure = Infrastructure mode wireless networking bridges (joins) a wireless network to a wired Ethernet network. Infrastructure mode wireless also supports central connection points for WLAN clients.

A wireless access point (AP) is required for infrastructure mode wireless networking. To join the WLAN, the AP and all wireless clients must be configured to use the same SSID. The AP is then cabled to the wired network to allow wireless clients access to, for example, Internet connections or printers. Additional APs can be added to the WLAN to increase the reach of the infrastructure and support any number of wireless clients.

Compared to the alternative, ad-hoc wireless networks, infrastructure mode networks offer the advantage of scalability, centralized security management and improved reach. The disadvantage of infrastructure wireless networks is simply the additional cost to purchase AP hardware.

Note that home wireless routers all feature a built-in AP to support infrastructure mode.

authentication: open system = The absence of a physical connection between nodes makes the wireless links vulnerable to eavesdropping and information theft. To provide a certain level of security, the IEEE 802.11 standard has defined two types of authentication methods, Open System and Shared Key. With Open System authentication, a wireless computer can join any network and receive any messages that are not encrypted. With Shared Key authentication, only those computers that possess the correct authentication key can join the network. By default, IEEE 802.11 wireless devices operate in an Open System network.

channel #: 6 = You want both the router and networkcard set to use the same channel.

wep: disabled = WEB short for Wired Equivalent Privacy, a security protocol for wireless local area networks (WLANs) defined in the 802.11b standard. WEP is designed to provide the same level of security as that of a wired LAN. LANs are inherently more secure than WLANs because LANs are somewhat protected by the physicalities of their structure, having some or all part of the network inside a building that can be protected from unauthorized access. WLANs, which are over radio waves, do not have the same physical structure and therefore are more vulnerable to tampering. WEP aims to provide security by encrypting data over radio waves so that it is protected as it is transmitted from one end point to another. Disabled make the initial connection easy to establish.

These are first settingsto get the first contact established between your router and wireless capable computer so that you can get on with setting up you security setting for your wireless network. YOU SHOULD NOT leave these setting for long because anyone can gain access to your network.

Toshiba Laptop Memory Upgrades

Toshiba is planning to use a new design intended primarily for consumer PCs

Toshiba is planning to use a new design intended primarily for consumer PCs to launch a new breed of business personal computers.
The company is aiming to introduce a PC later this year that would incorporate many of the technologies proposed as part of the Simply Interactive PC initiative, a standard proposed for a new kind of home PC that was introduced last year at WinHEC. Toshiba Laptop Battery The SIPC initiative is supported by Microsoft, Compaq Computer, Hewlett-Packard, and Toshiba. Compaq, HP, and Toshiba have all demonstrated prototype consumer devices based on SIPC.

SIPC was intended to define strictly consumer PCs, but the new Toshiba machine will actually be aimed at the business market, according to Michael Wagner, director desktop marketing at the computer systems division of Toshiba.

This is a surprise because the same players that backed SIPC had also supported a separate initiative, the NetPC initiative, to define server-managed corporate PCs. Both SIPC and NetPC were intended to rebut Oracle and its Network Computer, Toshiba PA3384U-1BRS Battery, Toshiba PA3285U-1BRS Battery, Toshiba PA3191U-1BRS Battery,a kind of Internet terminal that threatened to undermine Microsoft-Intel’s stronghold in PC design.

Toshiba’s decision makes clear that there is some confusion, or at least difference of opinion, among the major vendors on the function of these two new PC specifications.

Toshiba is expected to announce its entrance into the business market next Monday with its first line of corporate desktops. While the first set of systems will use a more conventional design, the SIPC-based machines will eventually be part of this new line.

Toshiba’s SIPC device will be a sealed-case business PC designed so that customers can add peripherals and upgrade components without ever opening the box. The systems may support one or more external drive bays, where a variety of devices can be swapped in and out, including hard drives, CD-ROM drives, and floppy drives. Memory upgrades will also be done externally, according to Toshiba. The novel machine could also be offered with a LCD monitor instead of a CRT display, Toshiba said.

NetPCs, on the other hand, are described as being quite different. NetPCs are not expected to have floppy disk drives and offer very restricted access to storage devices and other hardware.

Specfically, the NetPC is loosely defined as a corporate PC that will rely heavily on server computers for automated management. The major NetPC proponents are Microsoft and Intel.

While these two companies see a distinction between SIPC and NetPC, Toshiba apparently does not.

“SIPC was originally envisioned for the consumer, but we see it as evolving into the NetPC,” Wagner said. Part of the reason for this lack of distinction is based on the fact that the critical differences between NetPC and SIPC are defined, to a large extent, by the software, not the hardware.Toshiba PA3285U-1BRS Battery, An SIPC-based device could potentially be offered as a server-centric PC, functionally equivalent to a NetPC.

Moreover, Toshiba could elect to pare down its SIPC-based computers to more closely resemble a NetPC.

Some of the confusion may be cleared up at this year’s WinHEC in April when Microsoft is expected to spell out the differences between the SIPC and the NetPC specification. “SIPC is an initiative only. The technology can enable both sides, consumer and business, we see why there could be some confusion,” said Stacey Breyfogle, product manager of the personal business systems at Microsoft.

Microsoft will also spell out how the design has resulted in concrete implementation of technologies such as “On Now,” according to Breyfogle. With On Now, a PC can be instantly be turned on and off, much like a TV.
Toshiba has manufactured a prototype, next-generation DVD player that points toward future devices that have higher data capacity than current players.
DVDs currently store about 4.7GB of data on one side, more than enough for a two-hour movie with extra multimedia features. CDs max out at around 650MB.

The new Toshiba prototype player can handle 7.5GB of data per side, 60 percent more than current players and discs,Toshiba PA3384U-1BRS Battery, Toshiba PA3285U-1BRS Battery, Toshiba PA3191U-1BRS Battery, according to a report in the Nihon Keizai Shimbun, Japan’s largest business daily.

Moreover, based on improvement in chip technology and compression technologies, Toshiba PA3191U-1BRS Battery, the prototype player can deliver very high-resolution images, according to the report.

Also, the data transfer rate for the prototype is 14 mbps, about 4 times the speed of current designs.

However, more powerful chips must be marketed and a commercially viable blue laser device is also necessary in order to release a model in the marketplace, probably in the year 2000, Toshiba said.

The company hopes to increase DVD’s data storage capacity to 15GB per side.

What do i use in a TOSHIBA Satellite m10 s405 memory upgrade?

ok, i bought vista and tried to load it. it loaded but it seems like its too much for my laptop. its got 2 slots for memory that add up to 512 total. whats the max i can put in it? to be able to run vista smoothly?
and which is the best to get? any compatibility issues?

To find the correct ram memory modules and the maximum your lap top system will support got to http://www.crucial.com and run the two tools at top of page.
Vista home needs a minimum of 1 GB ram memory or more.
You can go to http://www.microsoft.com and run the tool to find if your lap top is Vista capable. It usually does not work good or at all on older lap tops.
Hope this helps
