Best one yet

This is my second netbook and very impressed. Most of these netbooks are very similar in performance and the selection really comes down to personal preferences. A few things I liked;

- The touch pad has a “bump” surface rather than being smooth

- Keyboard layout is ideal for touch typists (my other netbook is nice but it drives me crazy with the right shift key being smaller and offset)

- Screen is bright and can be easily adjusted to improve battery life

- As mentioned in other reviews, the battery life is great

- Most important for me was easy access to the memory and hard drive. This netbook has two access doors on the bottom so you can upgrade the memory or hard drive without having to take it completely apart (unlike the new Asus models)

I have upgraded the hard drive to an 80G SSD and the memory to 2G. It will never compete with a loaded laptop or desktop but it is pretty fast (for being a netbook) and easily handles MS Office.

The only item which causes some problem is the AC adapter. It has a rather large plug and will not fit in tight places (like some of the convenience outlets on the desks in hotel rooms). However, this is just a minor inconvenience.

Overall, this is a great netbook and plan to purchase a second one for a famiy member.

nice little unit.

Got the XP version, because the whole -idea- of win7 ‘starter’ just makes me angry. But specifically, the in-ability to extend the desktop onto another monitor (without a paid upgrade) is a major drawback for a unit with a 10″ screen. No such prob with the XP version, as is. Xp versions not available with >160Gb disk, so there’s your tradeoff.

I seriously considered the ASUS brand, which is well reviewed and offers slightly more bang for the buck, but, I own other Acer products, and finally just went with the familiar brand. I like the color too, fwiw.

The unit was packaged in the familiar handle box and arrived a day early without any sign of mis-handling. Unpacking and setting up the unit was straight-forward. Deleted several ‘free trial versions,’ dug up our home network key, downloaded Firefox, AVG, and a Citrix client (that gets me on the company server), and went to work.

The screen is clear, bright, and very sharp. I had no trouble working with smaller text and images. Didn’t hate the ‘chicklet’ keyboard either. I seem to be using only four fingers, but good speed and no more typos than usual.

XP recognized all the peripherals in the house, including two Canon printers, a chinese knockoff portable dvd drive, and multiple mice, keyboards and monitors. With mouse, keyboard and cheap 17″ monitor, this netbook is a desktop replacement as powerful and useful as any laptop I’ve ever owned. Disconnect everything, and its a great deal more portable — at less than half the price.

Only caveat is that I am not a gamer, so no comment there. The video and sound systems are plenty good for what I do. Before it recognized my crappy old 17″ monitor for the wimp it is, it was offering me some very large-pixel resolution choices.

Enthusiastically recommended.

Exactly What I Needed! Perfect for On-the-Go.

This has been the perfect on-the-go machine for me. I’m a student at a technical college and this little computer has been such a help. I’ll admit, I’m not very technologically inclined (hence going to tech school), but I’ve found my Acer to be very user-friendly. If you’re used to a desktop or a larger laptop, the small screen takes some adjustment. To me, the portability is worth the small screen. I was concerned that the keyboard would be too small, but I’ve had no trouble. The battery life has been more that I’d hoped. With moderate use, I’ve gone four days without having to charge the battery. Also, I’ve not experienced any issues while running multiple programs. My Acer has been the perfect extension of my home PC. I’ve been using it for a month and I still love it.

Excellent for light use

I found it handy as a second laptop. Opted for XP Home because I needed to be able to use a secondary monitory. I upgrade the memory to 2GB so that I could do slightly more. Battery life is OK (never tried to push it for 8 hours though)

Everything I wanted in a netbook

Great little netbook, first thing I did was pop in a 2GB dimm. Very easy to access memory and hard drive on this model as you do not have to remove the keyboard like have to do on some other models (Asus, Dell, Samsung etc)

There has been some controversy over what memory that Acers will run on…on a gamble I bought 2GB of memory G.Skill F2-5300CL5S-2GBSK Zero issues, booted right up had to do nothing in Bios.

Pros: Silver color (not a finger print magnet on the outside)
Bluetooth
10 hour battery(probably won’t get that long but maybe close)
Windows XP
Ease of access to hard drive to swap out if you want to
FAST with 2GB upgrade
Great Webcam

Cons: Not really any, just observations
Glossy screen reflects a bit but don’t all glossy screens?
Inside is the fingerprint magnet but not a big deal at all to me

Had originally bout a 14″ Thinkpad for an upcoming trip but decided it was still to bulky to bring with me. This netbook will accomplish all that I need for the next few months. Highly recommend!

Acer AO532h-2382 10.1-Inch Onyx Blue Netbook – Up To 10 Hours Of Battery Life

Best Ever

I bought this in red. It is a deep maroon, and although it is very nice, I think the onyx blue, which is a bluish black, looks very nice, too.
I am very glad I bought the machine. I have recommended it to everyone I know who is thinking about buying a netbook. It is very thin and light in weight, about as thin as a small book, and it looks very masculine and professional. (For both men and women I think masculine looking computers carry the day. A feminine computer looks very unprofessional.) I had looked at a number of brands in the stores and thought they looked like cosmetics cases or children’s toys. I did not want a computer that could be mistaken for a make-up case and I certainly did not want a toy.
I saw the blue Acer on sale at Office Depot with 7 Starter and I was very impressed with it, but I wanted XP and nobody local carries any netbooks with that OS so I ordered it from amazon, paying extra for the red one.
It is exactly what I wanted. I liked it so much I spent the first few hours after I got it connected to the net emailing everyone I knew to tell them about it. Most are academicians who want a small netbook to carry to conferences.
A friend has an older Samsung netbook and hers is about the size of an older desktop cassette recorder. Remember those? And is about just as heavy. Although the screen is the same size as the Acer’s the machine is much thicker. The Acer feels like a feather in comparison.
I was also able to copy some of my software to a flashdrive and install it on the computer, even though I am not a techie. It turned out not to be difficult at all and saved me the cost of an external DVD/CD drive.
The keyboard is quite large and quite easy to use. And I found the screen to be quite an adequate size. It does not feel cramped.
I also discovered through customer comments that it is possible to upgrade the RAM to 2gb on this model, even though the manufacturer doesn’t say so. However, the 7 Starter and XP versions of this model each take different memory modules. People who are interested should look this up in custo

PC2-6400 2 Gb CT25664AC800 Did not Work with This Netbook

Very happy with this netbook. Used now for 1 week. It does all it claims to do. Very nice machine. Only issue is getting used to the mouse pad.

There is a considerable amount of dabate over upgrading to 2Gb of ram. I got the 2 Gb PC2-6400 800 card and installed it and the computer would not boot.

I also bought this Acer Ao532h with Windows 7 starter for my wife. I popped the memory card in hers and it booted up without a problem and also it immediately recognized the 2GB of ram. I then placed the 1Gb card from the Acer Ao532 Windows 7 machine to mine (Acer A0523 with Windows XP) and it did not boot either. So I am now convinced that both machines use diffferent memory cards because of the difference in the operating systems. I am hoping what I am saying is true. Maybe it is my Acer with Windows XP is no good (based on a prior customers review) or I may need a different memory card.

Update: I ordered the Crucial 2GB 256Mx64PC2-5300 CT25664AC667 DDR2 200-Pin SODIMM Laptop Memory and installed it on My Acer Ao532h running Windows XP and it booted up recognizing 2GB of ram. Works like a champion. Now I am very pleased. *****5stars. Absolutely 100% satisfied with this netbook and so is my wife. Her’s running on Windows 7 starter pack.

CheapestAcer AO532h-2382 10.1-Inch Onyx Blue Netbook – Up To 10 Hours Of Battery Life

This is the Windows XP edition but has a larger battery and bluetooth

Please be aware that this comes with Windows XP, not Windows 7 Starter which has become the de facto standard for netbooks.

This may actually be appealing if you want to run XP, either because you don’t want to learn the new operating system, Win7, or because you see specific legacy advantages to XP (may run slightly faster than Win7 on the lightweight Atom processors that run most netbooks). Please note that if you don’t want to learn the new operating system, that probably isn’t the best of reasons since long-term support is probably going to be better for Win7, and Microsoft is reporting fewer virus problems with Win7 than with XP (although that may just be due to the fact that Win7 is still new).

Other than the operating system advantages/disadvantages, this unit comes with a more powerful battery (10 hour battery life from 5400 m.a. battery); the other current a0532h editions have a lower power rating, hence 8 hours of battery life. Also, this unit has Bluetooth.

So for about $30 over the cost of the more common edition, you downgrade to WinXP and upgrade to Bluetooth and a stronger battery.

If you are upgrading the memory module, latest user postings indicate you need to use an 800 Mhz module (PC-6400, not PC-5300 as indicated by the Acer published specs).

My rating of this unit is based on my brief ownership of the “standard” Win7 edition Acer AO532h-2223 10.1-Inch Matrix Silver Netbook – Up to 8 Hours of Battery Life.

My current favorite among netbooks is the HP Mini 210 HP Mini 210-1010NR 10.1-Inch Black Netbook – 4.25 Hours of Battery Life, due primarily to its matte screen (instead of glossy). But the Acer a0532h’s have some appealing features, like wireless “n” support, and a 6 cell battery (in the lower capacity) for the same price as the HP with a 3 cell battery and wireless “g”.

I have this WinXP edition Acer on order and will insert a comment to this original post to provide some hands-on notes later.

Issues About Choosing a Laptop SATA Hard Drive Dock Firewire

Have an older laptop IDE hard drive laying around after a system upgrade? Looking for a good solution to easily connect and use your internal hard disk drive? If you’re like many in todays modern techno-family, then you have extra hard drives lying around your home. Additionally, with the low cost of hard drives today, there really is no reason not to have extras for archive purposes. IDE/SATA hard disk dock is really a fine solution. There’re so many brand (NewerTech, Thermaltake, Unitek, NexStar) docking stations that we can’t make a right decision. Today, I want to list some issues about hdd docking station. Let’s start by one of the most important questions on “how many interfaces does a featured dock have?”

Data Transfer Interfaces

Most of notebook hdd dock has USB 2.0 port, and it’s the standard configure. Although it’s a little than firewire 800 or eSATA interface, it can meet our main need. Once mounted, you can watch the data just fly off the platters since you get the option of either Firewire 800 or eSATA. When you go with the latter, you’re getting near internal mount speeds of 3.0Gb/s. Even at 1394b rates, data access was darn impressive in our tests. If you want to transfer video to your computer, 1394B is going to help you easily, particularly as you use a MacBook.

First Impression and Price

There is nothing to be said against it that NewerTech products have always struck me as a variety of maker’s units that get conglomerated under one “brand” label, which isn’t necessarily bad, but it gives that brand name less power in my opinion. However, we need also regard the price factor. Actually, if you want to get a full-interface hd dock, Voyager Q or NexStar is a fine solution. If transfer speed is not your first priority, usb2.0 or firewire800/400 mac hdd dock can meet demand.

External Laptop PC Hard drive Dock not Recognize?

First check the manual list and make sure your laptop hard drive is compatible with your hdd dock station. And then right click “my computer” and select “Manage” when that Windows opens select “disk management” on the left side, you should see your hard drive there, activate and format the partition and it should appear as any other hard drive when it’s plugged in. If you have access to a secondary PC or laptop, try connecting your drive to it using a different USB cable. Also try unplugging your drive from the power outlet for a few seconds and then connecting it again. If it’s still not being recognized, you need to download the latest hard disk dock driver. How can I use an eSATA hard drive with my laptop?

I have Sony VAIO VGN-NS20z/s laptop. How can I use an eSATA drive with it?. Do I need some extra cables or hardware?. Please someone explain to me…Thanks.

An eSATA drive is an external SATA drive, which connects to a PC using an eSATA interface cable. Your laptop probably does not have such an interface or matching connector.

Usually, external drives also have a USB interface, which does the same job but at only about 1/4 of the speed.

Laptop Reliability Ratings 2009

Laptop Reliability Ratings 2009

A Roadmap For 2010

2009 was a year during which you needed more than a roadmap to navigate the financial markets. It was a year of volatility and amplifying investors’ mistakes. It was a year when a lot of ‘scared’ money moved out of Wall Street. It was a year with the lowest levels. And if investors did not enter the markets they missed one of the biggest rallies ever – the Dow Jones bounced more than 60% from the low to the high in 2009.

Some thought I ‘nailed it’ for 2008. In a December 2007 article about predictions for 2008, I was quoted as saying I was concerned about subprime lending and that perhaps that the bond market would do better than stocks and that perhaps stocks would be down. I did not know that the ‘wheels’ would come off the economy and that we would experience one of the greatest crashes in a generation. I had simply reviewed pre- 2008 statistics and averages – as the market was up for the fifth year. In an early 2009 blog posting I spoke about the need to re-balance. It was my opinion that although the stock market was ailing perhaps it was time to rebalance and add to stock holdings. These were not predictions for 2008 or 2009 but rather examples of how money management and rebalancing can work to your benefit.

As we begin our journey into 2010 I would like to share some thoughts, not predictions, about where we are headed financially. Following are some factors you should keep on your radar screen.

The Federal Reserve Bank
Ben Bernanke, Chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank, was named Time magazine’s Person of the Year for 2009. According to Time, he saved us from going into a depression. He cut rates and was creative in implementing programs to help the ailing mortgage and real estate markets. I am not so sure he will receive the same distinction for 2010. Sooner or later Mr. Bernanke will have to take away the proverbial ‘punch bowl’ and raise rates. During the last meeting of the Federal Reserve Bank in December 2009, the Fed stated that they will keep rates low for an extended period of time. What the Fed means by “an extended period” and when that extended period will end will play a key role in the future of our economy. This does not mean you need to ‘duck and cover’ should the Fed raise rates but you will need to monitor the situation. The question for most market observers will be how fast and how much the Fed will raise rates?

Washington, DC and Taxes
As always, we have to watch what Washington does. Government policies shape our economy, impacting the various sectors differently and affecting the stock market. Many investors will be watching how the Government will raise taxes. Will higher taxes be a burden to businesses and/or consumers and/or investors? How will capital gains be treated? Will owning stocks be advantageous or disadvantageous? Until we can get a better handle on what Washington plans to do there are several avenues for investors to consider – converting your IRA to a Roth IRA, reviewing your portfolio positions in relation to a potential increase in the long term capital gains tax rate and maintaining a balanced portfolio.

Smaller is Bigger?
As consumers we are looking for smaller and smaller electronics – we started with desktops then downsized to laptops and now our cellular phones, often just larger than a credit card, meet many of our computing and communicating needs. In the works are smaller and more efficient mobile chips as well as enhanced software programs. With newer and more efficient technological developments emerging almost every day worth looking at are the companies behind them.

Oil
Oil prices play a significant role for consumers in the U.S. Oil prices indicate levels of worldwide demand. Most consumers, needless to say, would like to see gasoline at two dollars a gallon and crude at forty dollars a barrel but what would that say about the state of our economy? And the world economy? Oil gives us a lot of clues as to what is going on in the world. As the world economy emerges slowly from recession, developing countries will increase the demand for oil with almost every expert predicting significantly higher price. While that in turn will benefit the producers it will certainly negatively impact the consumers.

China
Can you imagine China as the world’s engine? There are some reports that put China’s gross domestic product growth at 8 percent. The Chinese consumer is seeking more and driving global demand. In November of 2009 our trade deficit shrank as our exports increased – and where are so many of these exports going? To China. So, keep in an eye out for China in the coming year.

In 2010 we will have some tailwinds in our favor as the global economy rebounds but we will continue to face the headwinds with consumer leveraging and high unemployment. There are of course many factors to consider but the factors noted above are certainly worth tracking as you and/or your financial advisor plan for the future.

I wish you and your family peace and prosperity in 2010.

Firm launches new laptop power adapter

Companies around the world are continually trying to come up with new laptop chargers that provide them with a competitive advantage over rival firms and ensure that consumers consider them when preparing to part with their cash.

One such business is Cooler Master, which has released new laptop power adapters.

Known as the USNA95, the product is described as handy for transporting.

In a statement, the firm asked: “Tired of carrying that bulky notebook power adapter? What if you also have to bring along multiple chargers for other devices? Cooler Master is here to help with the new USNA95 notebook power adapter.”

As well as being “slim and light” the laptop chargers can power a variety of products, it claimed.

The enterprise added: “The USNA95 is compatible with a wide range of notebooks from all the major manufacturers.”

Cooler Master, which was founded in 1992 and has operations in a number of places, including Europe and America, pointed out that its laptop power adapters measure 104 by 62 by 17 millimetres.

It stated: “Its ultra thin design means that it’s easier to fit in your bag and the modular cable means that you’ll never again have a tangled up notebook charging cable, as it can be wrapped up on its own, rather than around the power adapter.”

Meanwhile, despite is small size, it is capable of delivering 95 Watts of output power, offering five times more than the original notebook power adapters.

The company added: “Using an adapter with a higher power rating allows for a cooler running notebook charger and many notebooks will also be able to charge quicker from a high-power adapter.”

These days, consumers have a range of products to choose from when selecting chargers and using the web can be one of the most cost-effective and convenient ways of sourcing the products.
