I think the easiest method is just to get a laptop hard drive enclosure. They’re usually pretty cheap, around $10-15. Take out the hard drive in your laptop, put it inside the enclosure and you can connect it to your desktop like it is an external hard drive through USB. You either have to go into the BIOS and change the boot order so it boots from the CD, or you have to press a keystroke early on during the boot process to select the CD for a boot device.
UPDATE:
You may have a bad CD then (or a bad CD-ROM drive).
Use a friend’s computer to download a free LiveCD, such as Knoppix ( http://www.knoppix.com ) or Ubuntu ( http://www.ubuntu.com ) and try booting from it. This will let you know if your CD drive and other hardware (sans hard drive, because the LiveCD leaves your hard drive alone unless you specifically change that option while booted into the LiveCD) is functioning properly.
