Acer Aspire AS5251 Laptop Review: A Sub $400 Laptop

Acer has recently skyrocketed in the list of the best selling laptops with their Acer Aspire AS5251.  At under $400, the price cannot be beat.  But does this inexpensive laptop pack enough punch to be considered among the best?

Of course, what first interests us about this AS5251 Acer laptop is the price.  We are accustomed to seeing the top rated netbook come in at prices around $400, but not laptops.  Laptops, typically, do not have the compromises and concessions that we find on netbooks.  These compromises are found in the form of limited memory, smaller hard drives, less-powerful processors, and much smaller laptop screens.

So, let’s look at what, if any, compromises that Acer had to make to deliver us this AS5251 laptop under $400 (the current asking price is $379 at many locations).

The first thing that I noticed when I received this laptop was the look and feel of the machine.  It’s quite similar to the ASUS UL80Vt-A1, which I currently rate as the best price/performance laptop on the market today.  The machine is black and comes with a 15.6-inch widescreen laptop monitor that provides solid quality with a built web cam, easily enabling you to video-chat with all of your friends.

The processor on the Acer AS5251 laptop is a 2.20 GHz AMD V Series V120 single-core processor.  I am normally an Intel processor devotee but this AMD processor is fast and handles video extremely well with the new Vision technology by AMD.  Many laptops that you find today come with a “dual-core” processor, but this processer should meet the needs of nearly every end user.

The hard drive on this machine is 250GB.  For our money, this is plenty of hard drive space that will suit all of your needs.  Remember, the hard drive space of a machine has nothing to do with the speed.  It simply determines how much information that you can store on the machine.  If you do word processing, PowerPoint, and all the other Office Apps, this size is sufficient.  For the rest of us, who store endless movies and music, we always need to buy another external hard drive for our laptops.  Thus, 250GB will satisfy all but the multimedia buffs, who are not satisfied with the storage capacity of any hard drive.

Now, when we look at the memory of this machine, we find the Acer AS5251 laptop with 3GB of DDR3 memory.  Is this a compromise?  Well, it’s a bit like the single core processor mentioned above.  Most of the top selling laptops today come with 4GB of memory, but we could reasonably ask the question:  Is this overkill?  Again, the standard end-user can get by with 3GB of memory just fine.  In fact, I know folks who still get by just fine with 1 or 2GB of memory in their machines and they are frequently running multimedia.

Finally, the clincher that this is a good buy is that it comes equipped with an HDMI port.  An HDMI port is the best way to connect a laptop to LCD TV, which is a great way to show a room full of people your picture and movies.

To summarize this Acer Aspire5251 review, I would say that this system sacrifices little for all that it offers.  You will have a laptop that performs above-average at a price that is not only affordable but downright inexpensive.

Cant delete some files – ‘no longer located’?

I have some huge .avi files which are taking up loads of space on one of my hard drives (on my Acer laptop I have two). A while ago I moved these files to my other hard drive to save space on the other one which I use most.

But now, when I go into the folder where they used to be I can’t delete them, I just get this error message: “This is no longer located in C:Users…. Verify the item’s location and try again”. I know where the files are now but I don’t want to delete them from there, and I can’t move the files anywhere either as the same error comes up.

If you have any ideas as to how I can delete these files I would be really grateful, I really need the memory space! Cheers

Go to a command prompt, to C:Users… and see if they’re there. If hey are, delete them. (If they’re not, you’re seeing some artifact when you’re in Windows, but not real files.)

Trying to fix my Gateway M275 laptop backlight on the screen.?

Okay so about a week ago my screen went black.I know the laptop is fine..When i run cables to my desktop monitor to my Gateway laptop you can see everything just fine.So i know its something in the laptop screen…I ordered and replaced the LCD inverter board and that didnt work.I notice there is also a” LCD CCFL WITH WIRE HARNESS GATEWAY” on Ebay which if im not mistaken is a light bulb for 20$…should i try replacing this?Or what other things might be the problem?

Ok. We can do this the easy way or the hard way. Since your question seems to be leaning toward the hard way, let’s start there.

If you are going to replace the backlight, make sure you have the right tools for the job, and a lot of time and patience. Did I mention time and patience? Most computer repair shops will not even attempt to do this for you because of the amount of time involved. They will simply suggest you purchase a new screen (and with good reason). If you are going to make your purchase and attempt to replace the backlight yourself, all I can say is I wish you the best of luck. I tried this once. It took me about 6 hours, over a 3 day period to successfully complete the job. I would rather set my hair on fire, and try to put it out with gasoline than to try this again.

Now let’s go through some troubleshooting steps:

1) Boot up your computer. Take a flashlight and shine it on the screen (at an angle). Can you see your login screen or your Windows desktop (or anything else other than black)? If no? Buy a new screen. If yes? Keep reading.

2) Shut down the computer. Remove the AC power. Remove the Battery. Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds (to ground the system board).

3) Remove your hinge covers (or what ever parts you need to in order to gain access to your inverter board.

4) Unplug all connections from your inverter board, and reseat the connections. Take note to make sure your inverter board is properly connected to the motherboard as well.

5) Replace all parts (including hinge cover, battery and AC adapter).

6) Power on the computer.

*****Does it work? If yes? Congratulations!!! If no? Keep reading.*****

7) Find your display close switch. This is a small button usually located somewhere near the laptop hinges. This button turns off the backlight when you close the display of your laptop. If the button got stuck inside, the backlight will not turn on even when the laptop is on and the display is opened. Try tapping on the lid close switch and make sure it moves up and down without any issues.

*****Did this work? If yes? Congratulations!!! If no? Keep reading.*****

8) Shut down the computer. Use a paper clip to hold in the reset switch for 10 seconds. Then reboot your computer.

If none of this works, you are back to square one: Where you either need to replace your backlight or your screen. Good luck. I hope I’ve helped a little.

Lenovo Laptop Mouse Pad Problems

Lenovo X200 Reviews

We experienced been only a tiny astonished when Lenovo announced an X sequence laptop computer using a 12.1in. wide-aspect display; subsequent all, the similarly sized ThinkPad X300 won greater than relatively a few hearts and minds when it experienced been released earlier this year. however the brand new ThinkPad X200 does nicely round out Lenovo’s ThinkPad family. It’s slightly more compact and appreciably much less high-priced compared to 13.3in. ThinkPad X300, also it provides additional hard-drive space (albeit, even although in the kind of the spinning, not solid-state, drive). additional importantly, its new Centrino a few of factors provide an amazing offer better efficacy than other ultraportables, as well as (with the 9-cell battery) the longest battery existence we’ve observed to date.

What the ThinkPad X200 doesn’t provide — a built-in optical drive, a touch pad — will certainly be considered a obvious deal-breaker for some users. And you’ll should hold some additional extra body fat to acquire a complete day’s worth of battery life. However, the Lenovo ThinkPad X200 helps make perception for frequent travellers who want an ultraportable that’s the two long-lived and effective adequate for just about any complete day’s run in the assortment of applications.

Even from throughout the room, there’s no mistaking the X200′s heritage: its rectangular dark circumstance (wrapped near to some magnesium chassis) is all ThinkPad. By virtue of its new wide-aspect display, it features a slightly bigger footprint than its predecessor, the ThinkPad X61s. In fact, the X200 now appears like a miniature edition using the 13.3in. X300. although the X200′s extra body fat starts at 1.36kg, our ThinkPad X200 evaluation system tipped the scales at 1.68kg with its 9-cell battery. We think the additional extra body fat is worth it (read on using the last results of our battery benchmarks) but acknowledge that some street warriors may favor the sub-1kg extra body fat using the Toshiba Portégé R500.

With the ThinkPad X200, Lenovo provides a wide-aspect ratio to its most transportable system. The 12.1in. wide-screen show features a sharp 1,280 by 800 native resolution that’s additional common on 14.1in. as well as 15.4in. displays. The resulting word and icons are most most likely about as tiny when you can choose at ease daily use. supplied the ThinkPad’s business focus, we appreciate the matte display finish, which avoids reflections in brightly lit business office environments.

Another advantage to steering broad using the ThinkPad X200 could possibly be the reality that there’s lots of space using the keyboard. Whereas Lenovo’s earlier ultraportable, the standard-aspect ThinkPad X61s, experienced (of necessity) a slightly compact keyboard, the ThinkPad X200′s wider circumstance can accommodate identical keyboard employed on Lenovo’s 14- and 15in.ThinkPads. The variation in dimension is noticeable; inside the X200 we certainly not felt like we experienced been typing on an ultraportable system.

Navigation, however, is nevertheless a touch limited. With its last few of ThinkPad models, Lenovo has attempted to accommodate the two fans using the red-colored TrackPoint pointing stick and individuals who favor a touchpad by which consists of the two options. The ThinkPad X200, however, features only the TrackPoint and three computer mouse buttons (the center functions like a scroll button); touchpad fans, of which there are many, will really feel left out.

Above the keyboard are essential quantity controls also to the relatively beneficial blue ThinkVantage button, which launches a suite of method maintenance, energy management, connectivity also to other utilities. every one of another traditional ThinkPad touches are here, which consists of the nifty keyboard lighting tucked under the lip using the lid collectively with a fingerprint reader under the keyboard for swiftly logging in to glass windows collectively with a company network.

As using the ThinkPad X61s, the ThinkPad X200′s slender circumstance does not have space for just about any built-in optical drive. This could possibly be considered a deal-breaker for some, but we like getting the choice of paring reducing our method in the direction of the bare essentials for travel; consumers who depend on optical advertising can be an amazing offer better away buying Lenovo’s UltraBase dock, which consists of a digital video disc burner, or opting using the ThinkPad X300, which incorporates the two an optical generate collectively with a bigger screen.

Otherwise, the ThinkPad X200 provides the essential ports and connections a home based business traveller will need, as well as one additional USB port than common also to the choice for built-in WWAN and GPS. There’s also a 1.3-megapixel Webcam above the display.

Our ThinkPad X200 evaluation system is built on Intel’s brand-new Centrino a few of platform, using a 2.4GHz Intel key a few of Duo P8600 processor and integrated Intel GMA X4500 HD graphics. the brand new CPU offers the ThinkPad X200 an advantage greater compared to low-voltage, lower-speed processors that energy other ultraportables. On our benchmarks, the ThinkPad X200 outperformed the Toshiba Portégé R500 also to the Apple MacBook Air, also it showed notable gains greater compared to ThinkPad X300. The ThinkPad X200 also simply outpaced several netbooks, which consists of the admittedly much less high-priced MSI Wind U100, producing it a much an amazing offer better choice for cellular specialists whose run extends previous internet surfing and sustaining up with email.

One using the essential promises with Intel’s new P-series processors is extended battery life, also to the ThinkPad X200 delivers. Its 9-cell battery lasted an astonishing 6 several hours 23 mins on our film playback drain test, which could possibly be the longest battery existence we’ve observed to date. It even bested more compact systems, for example the Asus Eee PC 901 also to the Samsung Q1 Ultra Premium. Anecdotally, we obtained about 6 several hours of battery existence by method of the ThinkPad X200 even although simultaneously working on documents, surfing the internet and wirelessly streaming music.

The preloaded suite of ThinkVantage functions allows consumers troubleshoot problems, and Lenovo’s help internet website consists of the anticipated troubleshooting topics, driver downloads and operator guides.

How to Extend Laptop Battery Life

You can make your laptop run longer on its battery by turning off or reduce all the things that expend power in your computer. If you are going on a long trip, or just taking your laptop to a local coffee shop, use these tips to help your laptop battery power last longer.
1.Switch off the wireless card if you do not plan to access your network or Internet connection. For Mac laptops, there is a button for powering on and off your wireless device is found on the toolbar at top.
2. Turn the volume level down, or mute it, if you do not plan to use it.
3.Reduce the LCD’s brightness level. If you use your laptop in a well lit area or outdoors on a sunny day, try setting it at two or three bars.
4.Disable Bluetooth. If you don’t use this device, you can safely disable it to avoid draining your laptop’s battery.
5. Learn to single-task. PC memory that is in-use takes more power to hold data. Also, using more memory might mean using more swap or virtual memory space on your laptop’s hard drive. All of this puts an additional drain on your Acer Aspire One ZG5 battery. Instead of leaving multiple applications and windows open, use only what you need at any given time. If your laptop has plenty of memory, then keep multiple applications open to avoid loading repeatedly from the hard drive. Close all the applications that run in the background on your computer like your PDA syncing software or USB hard drive backup software.
6.Run simple applications that don’t use much RAM, disk drive or processing power. Need to write a letter? Use a basic text editor rather than the processor and RAM heavy Microsoft Word. Graphics heavy applications like games or movie watching are especially hard on the battery.
7.Avoid extreme temperatures. Batteries rely on basic chemistry and will die faster at extreme temperatures. Try to charge and use the dell inspiron 1520 battery at room temperatures.
8. Use the power management settings on your computer that come built in. On Windows XP, click “Power Options” in your control panel. On a Mac, look for “Energy Saver” in System Preferences.
9. Unplug external devices such as a USB mouse or an external drive.
10.Shut down or hibernate the laptop rather than using standby, if you plan on not using it for a while. Standby continues to drain energy to keep your laptop ready to go when you open the cover.
11.Clean the contacts
Clean the contacts
Clean your battery contacts. Clean the dell inspiron 1520 battery metal contacts with rubbing alcohol on a damp cloth. Clean contacts increase the energy efficiency. [2]
12.Keep the battery fresh. Batteries leak power if they aren’t used fairly soon after charging. If you use your “full” vostro 1510 battery 2 weeks after you last charged it, you may discover it is empty.
13.Defrag your hard drive. The more fragmented your hard drive is the more your hard disk needs to work.[3]
14. Avoid using a CD or DVD. If you store a copy of data you need on an optical disc, copy it to your laptop’s hard drive or a thumb drive before traveling. Optical drives consume large amounts of power to spin up CDs and DVDs. Try to avoid applications that keep your hard drive or optical drive spinning. Need to play music? Try to use your handheld MP3 player, rather than playing songs on your computer. Playing songs on your computer will keep the hard drive working which uses energy. Turn off the auto save feature on MS Word or Excel. Constant saving will keep your hard drive turning and using energy.
15.Turn off ports. Disabling unused ports and components, such as VGA, Ethernet, PCMCIA, USB, and yes, your wireless, too. You can do this through the Device Manager or by configuring a separate hardware profile (see next step).
16.Create Power-Saving Hardware Profiles. Configure your laptop for the various scenarios in which you use it (on a plane, at the coffee shop, at the office, and so on). You can do this through the Hardware Profiles menu by right-clicking on My Computer and selecting Preferences or by using a freeware utility such as SparkleXP.
17. Use a cooling pad when using a notebook computer on your lap.
18. Avoid propping your laptop on a pillow, blanket, or other soft surface that can heat up.
Tips
* Don’t turn off a device if you’re using it.
* Take a break if your battery is running low.
* Be sure to charge up completely before you leave the house if there is no place to charge it where you are going.
* use the battery till it’s low before you charge it and when its charged un-plug it and your dell vostro 1510 battery will last longer plus give better performance.
* Clean your desk. It sounds strange, but if you have a dusty, dirty desk, that dust will get into the vents and clog the cooling fan. Once the dust is inside your laptop, it is much harder to remove. You can try blasting it out with canned air, but you run the risk of damaging internal components. You can also remove the vent and clean out the grit, but remember that taking apart your laptop can void the warranty. So clean your desk at least once a week, if not daily.
Warnings
* If you are working on the Internet and using the laptop, do not turn anything off or you will lose your work.
* If you use your computer for too long, it could overheat and slowly damage components (shorten their lifespan).
* Be careful when charging your dell studio 1535 battery. Never hook it up to charge it when you’re not around. With the plethora of battery recalls due to exploding and combustible Li-Ion cells, the process of charging your studio 1735 battery shouldn’t be taken lightly.
* Be careful when cleaning the contacts. Always clean them when the battery is fully drained, and use a very slightly damp cloth, so as to avoid electric shock and short-circuits.

Can my computer run wow?

I got a new laptop 6 months ago. My budget was really tight.. only 800$. So I went to futureshop, staples, best buy. I bought a gateway with a cooler pad.

Processor AMD Athlon II X2 M500 @ 2.2GHz
Memory 4096MB DDR2
Hard Drive 320GB 5400RPM SATA
CD-DVD Drive 8x Multi-Format Dual Layer DVD-RW
Graphics Chipset ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 512mb dedicated, Up to 2304 MB of HyperMemory
Display 15.6″ HD WXGA Ultrabright LED-backlit Display 1366×768 resolution, 16:9 aspect ratio

I know that almost every computer can run world of warcraft. I wanna know if my computer gonna be able to run it at high or medium in 1366×768 or 1024×768?

Is the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 512mb a good video card?

It said that I can upgrade up to 2.2gb, how can I do that?

You should be fine to run it. I run it at a medium graphics on a WAY worse setup then that. In fact I’d bet you could probably bump yourself up to high res and high-ish graphics.

Find Your Ideal Laptop for All Your Needs

If you don’t have a laptop yet it won’t be long now until you will be convinced of your need for one. Even though basic laptops still can’t keep up with the technology of desktops they have certain obvious advantages like portability, mobility, size and style.

But once you have decided to get a laptop the trouble starts. You have to clench your teeth and go through a possibly long selection process. However, it will be worth it as you can be sure to buy the laptop you really want and need by the end of the day.

Get the first information on the internet to narrow down the options. Do you want a refurbished one at a cheaper price or are you prepared to pay more to buy a high performance laptop? What are your specific needs and what is less important to you? If you clarify these questions first it is likely that you will end up with the right laptop and won’t regret the choice after a few months.

For the first time buyer it is also advisable to involve traditional retailers. Walk into a high street shop and see and experience the different laptops they offer. The advantage is that you can type on the keyboards and have a look at the screens to find out which would be the minimum or maximum screen size for you. It won’t take long and you will be asked by a shop assistant what you are looking for.

Even though he will try to make a pitch very soon he’s a good source of information. So don’t get nervous about his persistence and try to get as much information out of him as possible. Ask him in detail about the CPU, memory, warranty and software package and don’t get confused about the answers. If he is a well trained and educated sales person he should be able to explain even the trickiest technical details well enough to make them comprehensible. But anyway: you are learning at this stage and don’t have to understand everything. Take your time and ask every question crossing your mind. The most important thing is to find out which minimum requirements are necessary to satisfy your needs. Don’t leave the shop until you have clarified this.

After this excursion to the high street it is time to go on the internet again and use the gained knowledge for a new search. The advantage that comes from making the final decision on the internet is simply because of the extensive range offered by online retailer and price comparison sites. Having talked to the sales person you know at this stage which kind of laptop you really need and can filter out the best options. The main differences will now be price, brand and refurbished or brand new.

The question of whether to get a refurbished one is easy to answer and mainly depends on your personal attitude whereas he choice of the brand influences the product price heavily. Even though Apple laptops are surely stylish and state of the art they are more cost-intensive, too. Not every consumer will perceive the added value of the design and brand reputation worth enough to pay significantly more on their purchase. Manufacturers like Acer, Samsung and Sony offer a wide range of different laptop computer covering almost all budgets and have benefit from their long technological expertise.

The choice should be narrowed down to a few models and brands of laptops now, and therefore you can easily compare the prices and features of a laptop computer in greater detail. Once decided on a laptop it is up to you if you prefer to order it online or go back to a shop to do the purchase.
