Desktop Computers Vs Laptop Computers – Which one is better?

As geeks correctly predicted in the late seventies, computers have become indispensable pieces of equipment in everybody’s lives. Computers enabled people to share photos and videos in a manner that would have been mind boggling decades earlier. However, in this world where information is at their fingertips, people still encounter a little bit of difficulty in choosing which type of computer is the best for them. Desktop computers claim to have functionalities that can never be rivaled, while laptop computers assert that they have desktop power and the advantage of being mobile. So between desktops and laptop computers, which one is better?

The laptop definitely has its benefits over the desktop computer, but there are also some drawbacks to having a laptop. For instance if you use the laptop for long period of time without a break, the bottom of the laptop can get uncomfortably hot on your legs.

If money is tight, yet a computer is an absolute necessity, it may be wise to thoroughly research the topic. Only when you understand the major differences between cheap desktop computers and inexpensive laptops, will you be able to make an informed decision.

While we are talking about price, the price difference between a Netbook and some of the less expensive laptops is not that much. It may be worth taking some time to shop around and compare prices on some laptops and some Netbooks to see which is the better deal for you.

If you shop around, make a note of the features of the laptops and Netbooks, including; price, CPU speed, Ram memory installed, version of Windows, screen size, keyboard size, and typical battery run time. If you can try a demo laptop and a demo Netbook, it will give you a better feel for the overall differences.

If you decide a NETbook is the right portable computer for you, you will have a lightweight, ultra portable computer that does exactly what you need. And at a good price.

Computers come in many shapes, sizes, colors and brands. Some are very expensive, while others are more affordable. The two main categories are desktops and laptops. The first one is stationary, while laptops are smaller, lightweight and can be taken along.

If money is tight, yet a computer is an absolute necessity, it may be wise to thoroughly research the topic. Only when you understand the major differences between cheap desktop computers and inexpensive laptops, will you be able to make an informed decision.

Netbook vs laptop – I’m confused?

What’s the difference between the two? From what I gather, netbook gives you an easy access to the Internet. Does a netbook have a smaller storage space than a laptop?

It’s quite simple: Netbooks are indeed smaller than notebooks; we usually say that a netbook can have a screen up to 10 inches from corner to corner. Netbooks are cheap and have relatively slow processors, but this is because they are designed for more basic tasks.

You’ll also find that netbooks don’t have optical drives. They sometimes have Solid State Drives (SSDs) instead of Hard Disk Drives, which are lower capacity but have no moving parts and should, in theory, increase battery life and speed. The last difference is that most netbooks can run either Linux or Windows XP.

A laptop (also called a notebook) is computer which has been designed to be made portable, featuring a screen hinged to a keyboard. A laptop includes a battery for portable power and a touchpad instead of a mouse for input.

Mini laptops (also called a netbook, subnotebook or ultraportables) take these ideas further still, creating a new market above handheld computers, smartphones and personal digital assistants. The primary characteristic of these are smaller size and weight, which are pretty similar to the average diary, as well as costing less than a standard laptop with prices starting at around £150, an excellent solution during the credit crunch!

Mini laptops aren’t as powerful as bigger notebook computers, and lack the power for big, demanding programs as well as an optical disc drive – so no CDs or DVDs. None the less, connectivity is a central focus for netbooks. Internet downloads are quickly catching up on hard media products, so perhaps it’s not such a loss.

In short, the difference between laptop and netbook is a netbook is smaller, lighter, cheaper (on the whole) and simpler.

The Top 6 Reasons You Should Invest In A Mini Laptop

Today, mini laptops, also known as mini notebooks or netbooks come with almost all the features of  standard laptops. There are virtually no drawbacks to using them and in fact they are a better choice in many instances. Let’s explore the top 6 reasons to invest in a mini laptop.

Reason 1: The most obvious feature of the mini laptop is it’s compact size and light weight. It can be easily carried and stored anywhere you happen to go. They weigh only about 2 pounds and slip easily into many purses or a briefcase. If you prefer to carry yours seperately you can purchase a case designed specifically for your little computer!

Reason 2: The second nice feature of these mini notebooks is their relatively low cost. It can fulfill the needs of all the family members without putting too much of a dent in your wallet. You can buy a “mini” for  anywhere from about $200-$500 as opposed to approximately $700-$1500 for a standard laptop.

Reason 3: Another reason for investing in a mini laptop is the array of features they sport. most come with 3 USB ports and have many entertainment and internet options. Unlike hand held devices, that can cost just as much or more, they have a more powerful   processor, more substantial memory and more software options. Your kids can get plugged in to explore and learn about a whole range of things around the world! These small powerhouses have features for wireless devices as well as a Bluetooth device and come in a sturdy, protective casing. There are also memory cards and flash cards available for the minis. And last, but not least, there is much flexibility in the upgrading process.

Reason 4: Mini laptops also have an impressive array of technical features. They are available with Windows XP, Ubuntu, Mac and Linux operating systems. The memory space is about 512MB to 1GB (with the option to boost it to 1.5GB – at least on the Acer Aspire). Storage space is about 60-80GB. With the Acer Aspire you get a 160GB hard drive. It is difficult to discuss all of the technical features because they can vary from brand to brand and I am the most familiar with the Acer Aspire One.

Reason 5: The netbooks are also great for business on the go. They have basic software programs that enable the user to create spreadsheets, documents and PowerPoint presentations as well as allowing for checking emails and instant messaging. When you get a little down time you can also listen to music, browse the net, chat or take pictures. All in all quite a handy machine! It is a much easier to travel with alternative to the full size laptop.

Reason 6: Another point in favor of the mini laptop is that it leaves a smaller environmental footprint. It uses comparatively lower battery power and it’s battery also has a long life. The smaller computers are “greener” and make less of an impact on the surrounding environment!

These 6 reasons present a powerful argument for investing in a mini laptop. Right now I only have a desktop pc and my husband owns a laptop.  We also have a 13 year old son. Our family’s next computer will be a mini laptop for sure! The only dilemma will be who gets to use it when!

What type of mini netbook/laptop would you suggest?

I am currently a student and will be for the next few years, and I want a really light, compact laptop/netbook that I can carry to class and take notes on, etc. I have heard about the HP 1116NR 8.9″ and it looks pretty nice for what it is. I have a 15″ macbook pro core i5 that I will use at home and when I need a more powerful computer, but its too big to haul around. So for my case, mainly just notes and stuff and writing down things from lectures, what would you guys suggest? I have also looked at the Dell Mini 9 and that looks promising, but I am not sure if there are better ones out there. Also I want to install a 16-32 GB SSD so a computer that is compatible with that would be nice.

MacBook Air 11 inch, it has a 64gb solid state chip, unfortunately, it isn’t cheap. They start at $999

Universal Laptop Adapter using Tips:
Power adapters are essential to proper laptop function. There are many simple mistakes that can damage the adapter over time. Bending, overheating, water and voltage problems can weaken the adapter and make it less effective in providing power to the computer. Taking early precautions to avoid this damage will increase the longevity of the product and prevent inconvenient damage and replacements.

Avoid Bending the Adapter

Bending the power adapter can cause damage to the cable and laptop. Extensive pressure on the wires can cause the wires inside the adapter to break apart. When this happens, the adapter is unable to maintain solid contact and may cause the power supply to short circuit, or allow the current to stop flowing or travel along an unintended path. A short can cause extreme damage to the laptop.
Prevent this situation by not allowing the power adaptor to bend at any point near the laptop. Being vigilant about this can prevent it, or for added security, the cable can be reinforced with a popsicle stick and tape.

Avoid Overheating the Transformer
The transformer, easily identified as the box in the middle of the power cable, can be destroyed by overheating. Be sure to safeguard against this by making sure that the transformer is never covered up or placed right next to the laptop. Air flow will cool the transformer off to a sustainable level, but preventing air contact will quickly overheat and fry the electronics within the box.

Avoid Damage

There are other means of damaging a power adapter that must be avoided. Be sure to use the adapter in safe locations where it does not pose a tripping hazard. The sudden pressure applied when someone trips over the cable can damage the adapter and the laptop.
When using a universal laptop power supply, it is critical to identify the correct voltage. Using voltage that is too low can force the laptop to rely partially on the battery. Too much voltage can destroy the battery.

Like all electronics, Universal power adapters are susceptible to water damage and must be protected accordingly. Be careful when using the adapter around bodies of water or even beverages. Contact with too much water can cause shocks or electrical shorts. A short in the cable can cause a power surge that could be very damaging to the laptop.

Could my laptop power chord cause this problem?

Ever since my Dell Inspiron 700m laptop chord broke and I got a universal AC adapter, my battery won’t charge properly, it will decide to charge fully or partially and then slowly die or not charge at all, completely randomly. I did not have this proble with my Dell chord. Should I get rid of this universal one and invest in a new proper Dell one? Or could it be a battery problem or CMOS battery problem (cause I also happen to always get a CMOS error message on reboot when my computer shuts itself down when there’s no more battery power left)

HELP!!!!!!!

The CMOS error probably means you need to replace the CMOS battery-it’s probably dead. You should probably invest in a more proper power adapter though-the proprietary Dell ones are probably the best choice in this situation. Different laptops require different amounts of current and voltage, and thus your laptop is probably not getting enough of a charge to actually charge the batteries before they run out.

How would I find out if I had a mini pci slot? ((^CPU up there))

It depends If your laptop has a any available mini pci slots. If none, i’m sad to say no. But if you do then try contacting the manufacturer for an upgrade to an card with at least 128mb of memory and pixel shader 2.0. You should of posted you cpu speeds also, but since our model is kinda old you still may not be able to play it, if it’s not a 2.0ghz or higher the game will lag. If your notebook is really behind, you can’t do anything about it except get another. Here the requirements for the game:

Dell Laptop Ac Adapter Problems

Dell Laptop Ac Adapter Problems

Buy Laptop AC Adapter Online

Like the laptop battery, AC adapter is easy to go out of work. A replacement adapter is necessary for laptop users. Just have a look of the adapter market, there are various products. I have the compaq PPP012L AC adapter from an online store. Usually, I prefer to accumulate such information about the laptop AC adapter. Some people cared about how to choose the laptop adapter.

The first thing that we should care about is the power of the adapter. Most of the nominal power supplier is 65w like this Compaq V4000 AC adapter or 70W. it’s easy to see that the price of the laptop varies. Is there any difference among those adapters? Like this 70W universal AC adapter, it’s much useful under such a price. Here we should put forward that some of the laptop AC adapter can’t reach the expected number. Actually, 70w is the highest mount of the current, especially for the non-original products. That is why some said that the higher watts can be useful. On the contrary, the lower one can’t support enough power as the laptop requires.

It’s serious to select a suitable replacement of your laptop AC adapter. For some bad adapter, it will put your laptop in potential disaster situation. That is why I have bought a new dell 6400 AC adapter after I heard about the bad effect of the low quality adapter. this doesn’t mean that we have to buy a original adapter. This is unnecessary. Here we come to the next point- the brand.

Take this dell E1405 AC adapter for instance; it’s my ex-AC adapter. It’s true that the original adapter is the best match of your laptop. Thus, there is only one that suits your laptop so perfectly. For the brand name products, they have better and longer warranty of their products. If you have any problems on your adapter, you can ask the experts for help. While for the low quality products, they have no such guarantee. However, it’s really convenient to buy on the online store. They have good quality and low price. It’s an economical way.

Laptop adapter problems?

I bought a new battery for my laptop, but every time I plug the charger in now it says:

“The AC power adapter type cannot be determined. Your system will operate slower and the battery will not charge. Please connect a Dell 65W AC adapter or highter for best system operation.”

It does not charge, as it says, but the laptop will still run on the power from it and keep the % used of the battery the same while it’s plugged in.

It always used to work. How can I fix this? I really can’t afford a new laptop/adapter after buying the battery ]:

Does this happen only after you bought the new battery? or did you buy a new battery because this message showed up?

I believe your problem is the ac adapter because Dell has a build in mechanism to make sure the adapter is Dell before allowing it to charge the battery. However, even if the adapter is Dell, if the identifier chip inside the charger is broken, the laptop would refuse to recognize the charger and stop charging.

You can follow this Dell’s troubleshooting guide to try to get the laptop to recognize the charger. This troubleshooting guide is a bit outdated though, so I am not sure if it applies to your laptop.

http://ftp1.us.dell.com/diags/R66243.htm

If the troubleshooting does not work, most likely, you will have to buy a new ac adapter since the laptop cannot identify the charger as Dell anymore. However, before you buy a new adapter, borrow someone else’s adapter to make sure it will charge the laptop and that is the problem for sure. I wouldn’t want you to waste money on a part that is not necessary.

If you do have to buy a new adapter, I would recommend buying one from Topmic.com because they offer lifetime warranty and free shipping to all chargers at a good price. I think it is definitely worth it to consider buying adapter from them.

Best of luck.
