New laptop makes noise except when music is played. Why?

I have a new laptop HP Pavillion dv6000 series and it makes a noise when running off battery power. It sounds like a high pitched bzzt and I thought it was my hard drive but it stops as soon as I play a music file. It won’t make the sound as long as the music is playing even if I mute it. It also stops as soon as I plug in the AC adapter. What part of my laptop would make a bzzt except when a music file is played. It’s not coming from the speakers either.

Doing a quick search turns up quite a few complaints about the noise issue. It seems alot of people are returning their systems due to it.

One of the threads I found did have a suggestion on how to stop the noise, but it will drain the battery a bit more quickly when not plugged in.

About how much is my computer worth?

I’ve moved on to laptops, so I was wondering about how much my self-built computer is worth. It has a Gigabyte 7N400 Pro2 motherboard, AMD Athlon 1.14Ghz CPU, 1.5 GB RAM, 160GB HDD, 650W power, NVidia GeForce FX 5200 Ultra video card, networking card, sound card, DVD-ROM drive, CD-RW drive, floppy drive. The coolest part is the case.. it’s an Aerocool Acryclear II (http://www4.shopping.com/xPF-Aerocool-Aerocool-Acryclear-II-Acrylic-PC-Case-Retail) with 4 LED fans (including the CPU’s fan).

The case is your best asset. You can get 40 bucks alone for just that. All together, I would appraise it for $150. However you would be lucky to get $100 for it, ‘for real’. If you want a more accurate guesstimate then hop on over to pricewatch.com and look up each part (or equivalents) it should give you a good asking price. These days, for $150 you can build a tower with twice those specs as long as you know how to put it together. What i would do in your case, is sell it to someone that needs it all set up with software and do as much as you can do for them to get the most out of it. For example, ask them if they need MS Office, things of that nature.

how do you insert a border on wordpad?

i have a HP compaq laptop and i have to write something for my history class and print it out but it has to have a borer and i am working on something on my PC called wordpad and it is fine the only thing is i don’t know how to insert the border.

Word pad doesn’t do that. It is intended to be a poor man’s (or woman’s) version of word. It does very basic text editing with some formatting but borders and such are supported.

You have to go to Word or something like that.

What to do when Toshiba Satellite M50-P3451 AC Adapter does not charge the battery

Recently the my Toshiba Satellite M50-P3451 AC Adapter has not been charging the battery when the computer is powered on. It will charge it when it is off though. Strangely when I turn on the computer the battery light will go off while the Toshiba light will remain on. After windows boots up completely the icon signifies it charging for a brief 5 seconds and then reverts back to battery power only. The computer will boot normally with just the battery in.
However, when I try just Toshiba Satellite M50-P3451 AC Adapter with no battery in, the laptop will boot up until the black screen right before the Windows logo normally shows up. Then it will shut off completely. Also note that with just the Toshiba AC Adapter in I can actually leave the computer on indefinitely with no battery only while I’m in the systems bios. As soon as I try to start windows it will shut off before the logo. I have also tried another Toshiba Satellite M50-P3451 AC Adapter but not a different battery. It almost seems like windows is involved with the problem. Any ideas?
Will it make any difference if you boot the laptop into safe mode? May be Windows power management software is screwed up.
Here’s another test. You can boot the laptop from a live Linux CD. I usually use Knoppix CD. If you start the laptop from this CD, it will boot into a Windows-like environment. It loads Linux OS directly from the CD bypassing the hard drive. It’s a good test to find out if you have a software related problem. If the laptop still switches to the battery with the Toshiba Satellite M50-P3451 AC Adapter plugged, then it’s not software related problem.
You can also reinstall the operating system form the recovery DVD, it will eliminate any software related issues too. Make sure you the laptop has the latest version of BIOS. Upgrade the BIOS if needed.
A bad connection between Toshiba Satellite M50-P3451 AC Adapter power jack on the system board and the system board is a very common problem with Toshiba notebooks. If your laptop is out of warranty, then you can fix the problem by resoldering DC-IN jack on the system board. If it’s still under warranty, it would be fixed at no charge to you.

How do I remove Sabayon – Linux OS from a Toshiba laptop set up with a dual boot to WinXP Home, too?

I’ve acquired a Toshiba laptop with two operating systems on it. WinXP Home and Sabayon-Linux. I’ve looked in the WinXP Control Panel-Add/Remove Programs but there is no reference to Linux. I’ve looked at My Computer – C: drive and see no reference or folders to the Linux system. I’ve done a global search for the term Sabayon on the C: drive, no joy. I have Administrator privileges on the WinXP OS, but only a logon password for the Linux OS. The previous owner got the PC with both OS’ installed. I have a legit copy of WinXP Home with validation codes. I also have an OEM disk of WinXP Pro with activation codes, but when I tried to use it, it said it was an older version of XP and declined to run.
I am totally unfamiliar with Linux and would like to regain the hard drive space being occupied by the Linux OS.
I would prefer not to have to reformat the drive and reinstall the WinXP and lose all the installed programs. TIA

From windows xp you can go to my computer and just format the the drive that linux is on. And then go to control panel adminstators tools and disk managment and from there you should be able unpartician the drive.
