Dell Laptop is not letting me use touchpad mouse or switch between programs?

Hey, I have a Dell Inspiron 1440 and recently it has been acting weird. When it just turns on, the mouse doesn’t work at all. I just shut the lid and then I open it and the mouse works fine, but then I can’t click any programs to switch to and from. Help?

Hi Kelcie,

This sounds a little strange, however I will still try to help you.

Firstly, this sounds to me like it could be a hardware error, we’re going to have to hope that this isn’t the case otherwise you will need to have the laptop repaired by Dell or another expert.

First thing is first. It sounds simple but when you boot up the laptop, click the mouse buttons a few times and then try to move it around. My computer does this occasionally and it takes a few clicks for it to recognise that there is a mouse present. Do the same thing with the trackpad, click the buttons on it a few times and then try using it to see if it is responsive. If this doesn’t work, continue reading.

Are you still able to type on the keyboard? If you hit key functions like Ctrl + Alt + Del does the laptop do anything? Have you tried navigating the computer by using the Windows Key (situated near the spacebar with the Windows flag on it) and then using the arrow keys to navigate through the start menu? Try also hitting Alt + Tab to see if that lets you switch between applications.

If all of these work, then it may be a software problem causing your mouse and trackpad to become unresponsive. If none of these work, then it might be down to a hardware issue, in which case I’d suggest checking if the computer is still under warranty, and taking it for repairs by Dell or another company.

If you’re able to access one, try finding up the Windows CD (the same CD used to install XP or Vista or 7 onto your computer) and insert it into your laptop. Make sure you have backed up all your data to an external storage device (hard drive, pen drive, etc.) and then reinstall Windows. This is a lengthy process but it may be the only way to tell if your software drivers have become corrupted (software drivers are the small background running tasks that enable your laptop to identify if there is a mouse or trackpad attached to it.)
