Dell Latitude ATG D620

Muscling in on Toughbook territory, Dell has launched its first semi-rugged notebook, the Latitude ATG D620. With its sturdy case, data protection features, and ultrabright display, plus optional mobile broadband, Dell Inspiron 1501 Battery system should satisfy demanding field workers and anyone else who needs a fast Core 2 Duo notebook that can take a beating. But what separates this laptop from its competitors is the peace of mind that comes from having the same drive image and docking solutions as other Dell portables.

Weighing in at an even seven pounds and Sony VGP- BPS10 Battery, the ATG (All Terrain Grade) D620 weighs nearly two pounds heavier than the non-ruggedized D620.

However, this system feels as though it can stand up more punishment than a typical “business rugged” laptop. You get a magnesium-alloy chassis, shocked-mounted hard drive, and high-durability, scratch-resistant paint. The notebook even looks the rugged part with its black pebbled lid and hinges that resemble darkened concrete. The back of the machine also features strategically placed rubber housings that cover and protects the four USB ports, VGA, and Ethernet jacks. You won’t find a memory card slot, Dell GK479 Battery Dell says was excluded for security reasons at customers’ requests.

Durability even permeates the 14.1-inch (1,280 x 800-pixel resolution) widescreen display, which is shock-mounted to withstand 30 percent more force than traditional LCDs. The ATG D620 also sports an ultrabright screen of 500 nits (about 2.5 times brighter than the regular D620), Lenovo/IBM Thinkpad T61 Battery makes the display easily viewable outdoors. When you’re typing in the dark, two red lights glow on top of the display to light up the keyboard. The panel delivered good color saturation and generous viewing angles.

We found the spacious, spill-resistant keyboard conducive to an enjoyable typing experience, although the keys would’ve benefited form a sturdier feel. We liked that Dell included a pointing stick as an alternate navigation option over the standard touchpad. Above the keyboard KD476 Battery are handy volume control buttons.

Powered by the 2-GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, the ATG D620 turned in a very good score of 251on MobileMark 2005. The 9-cell battery included with this configuration provided 6 hours and three minutes of battery life with Wi-Fi off and 5 hours and 51 minutes with HP Pavilion DV6500 Battery on. (The standard 6-cell battery will save you only $19, so we recommend the 9-cell for extra runtime.) The Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 produced a solid 3DMark03 score of 1,704, good battery when paired with the 1GB of RAM in this configuration ensures a good Windows Vista experience.

Apple A1189 Battery’s easy to stay connected when you’re out of hotspot range using the embedded Dell Wireless 5700 Built-in EVDO Mini-Card for Verizon Wireless service, which delivered an average thoughput of 511 Kbps–good enough to load most Web pages quickly and download e-mail and other critical data in the field. (You can also opt for a Sprint or Cingular wireless WAN modem.) We also saw impressive Wi-Fi data rates in our testing, with scores of 16.8 Mbps from 15 feet and 14.3 Mbps from 50 feet. Early adopters will be happy to learn that the ATG D620 is 802.11n ready.

The security-conscious will appreciate the Wave Embassy Trust suite, Computrace anti-theft solution, TPM, HP DV6500 Batteryand an optional fingerprint reader. The system comes with a three-year limited warranty with next-business-day on-site service. Bundled software includes CyberLink PowerDVD, Roxio Digital Media, and a free 90-day trial of Norton Internet Security.

Dell’s first semi-rugged notebook is a commendable effort; the ATG D620 looks more like a reinforced Latitude than a system that’s been designed from the ground up for field use, but Dell KD476 Battery delivers a better balance of speed, features, and durability than other systems in its class. On the other hand, Panasonic’s Toughbook CF-74, which features a 13.3-inch touchscreen and weighs a pound less, is a better bet for frequent travelers.

Nevertheless, Lenovo/IBM T61 Battery machine should please buyers looking for a rough-and-tumble notebook who would rather deal with only one vendor for all their mobile IT purchases.

Okay so the other day I was drinking coke and spilled a little on my keyboard.
Everything works and it’s perfectly fine.

How do I get them to unstick?
Is there a way?
It’s under the keys.

MY LETTER SISTER DID THAT TO OUR COMP. I POPPED THE KEYS OUT AND CLEANED THE BOTTOM OF THE KEYBOARD WITH A CLOTH AND ALCOHOL (IT EVAPORATES FASTER.) ALSO IF YOU POP YOUR KEYS OUT MAKE SURE YOU REMEMBER WHERE THEY GO LIL

Sony VAIO TZ Review

The Sony TZ is the latest offering from in the ultra portable market. With its small size and extreme low weight, it is a must on any business traveler’s notebook list. The Sony TZ original battery code : sony vgp-bps8 , vgp-bpl8, laptop battery combines a new LED backlight display, solid state drive, over-sized battery, and ultra low voltage processors from Intel to make it an all around extended battery performer. Read on to find out how the paper specs stack up in real world use.

The touchpad was easy to use, and very stable with finger tracking. did not appear to have any lag moving across the screen, nor did it have any pause when it sat idle. My only complaint with the touchpad was the upper boundary was flush with the keyboard tray, making it easy to slide your finger right off the surface. The soft texture made the touchpad easy to control, as well as very comfortable on the fingertips.

Performance and Benchmarks
The only modern game I found to work at decent frame rates was Half Life 1 as mentioned in my first look. Watching movies, editing photos, and using productivity software worked out much better. The beautiful LED backlit screen really made those activities enjoyable. Below are the standard benchmarks to see how this laptop stacks up against others notebooks. Keep in mind that the TZ compares favorably to other notebooks in the ultra portable notebook class.

Software
Once you dig deep past the bountiful bloatware, and get a chance to uninstall most of it, the TZreally becomes different machine. Power usage drops, programs load faster, startups and shutdowns speed up … I can’t recommend enough that users clean off all of the bloatware before they start using the notebook. If you add up all the preinstalled software, by far the most has to do with specific Sony notebook features like backlight adjustment or eject functions. If you take off too many, you start to lose vital functions. I really wish Sony incorporated all system functions into one software package.

Battery
Under normal use, backlight at 80 percent, Optimized power profile set, and using wireless for web browsing, the TZ pulled off six hours and 43 minutes. I was hoping for more, as the preproduction model seemed to go more than seven hours, but it was still very good. Watching movies on the laptop got just less than four hours, meaning you could get through even the longest movies on a flight without a recharge.

Charging the battery took quite long compared to what I have been used to. More than five hours to get a complete charge was not out of the question, and two hours to get over 50 percent. Most other laptops will charge at a faster rate up to the 75-80 percent level, but the TZ had no such feature.

Heat and Noise
Even with the low voltage processor and SSD drive, the Sony TZ could produce heat with the best of them. The bottom of the notebook got quite hot even under normal use, and the fan was always running after the notebook had been on for over 20-30 minutes. Fan noise was minimal, and the only way to tell it was blowing would be sticking your hand next to the outlet, and feeling the warm air blow past.

Below are heat overlay images showing where the Sony warmed up (in degrees Fahrenheit) during normal extended use

Conclusion
Compared against every other ultra portable notebook I have worked with, the Sony TZ was by far the brightest, lightest, and smallest of the bunch. The screen was gourgeous, battery life was excellent, and the notebook barely weighed anything. I would recommend this notebook to anything considering a portable laptop, especially those who demand the lightest possible items for travel.

Where are the volume controls on a Sony Vaio TZ Series laptop?

This is such a stupid question, but my boss just got a new laptop and he asked me to find out how to change the volume controls! I don’t have the computer in front of me so I can’t look at it to see, but I need to know the answer in such a way that I can explain it to him.

THANK YOU A MILLION!!

Click on the speaker icon down by the clock, volume switch will appear, slide it up and down.
