Dell Inspiron IM1012-799CRD Mini 1012 10.1-Inch Netbook (Cherry Red)

Great portable computer for surfing, email, and productivity apps

I’ve had this netbook for about a week now and have been using it to varying degrees every day. I bought it to use as an inexpensive secondary machine for home and travel. I’ve been very surprised with how well it works for browsing the Internet, checking email, and performing typical office tasks (e.g. creating docs in Word). I’ve also been pleasantly surprised with its ability to support video playback. I wasn’t expecting it to support video well at all. I did not get the model that supports HD video since that wasn’t offered at Amazon.

Unlike some other netbook keyboards I’ve tried in the stores, the keyboard on this machine is fantastic with very good feedback. Size is nearly that of a full size laptop keyboard. Even with big hands and a preference for butterfly keyboards, I find I can type on it very well.

The display is crisp and clear. Color seems to be good for the casual user. However, the viewing angles are limited. I suppose that is to be expected within this price range. The display needs to be right in front of you and perpendicular to your line of sight for best viewing. I’m used to using a Dell 24 inch Ultrasharp with my desktop and my work laptop is a Dell Latitude D830–both have much better viewing angles.

The touch pad works well, but the integration of the buttons and pad make it more cumbersome to use than a traditional pad with dedicated buttons. I’ve found it most annoying when trying to grab something and drag. The buttons can also be difficult to push.

Battery life has been pretty much as advertised. I get about 6-7 hours per charge.

As mentioned above, I’ve been impressed with the machine’s ability to support video playback. It seems to handle standard definition flash vids (YouTube), windows media video, and Silverlight vids (Netflix streaming movies) with no problems. I took the machine to my son’s doctor appointment recently. They have wifi and I was able to stream video from both [...] and [...] with no trouble at all.

It struggles with HD content such as you find on YouTube and with 640×480 AVIs that your typical point and shoot camera records. I have some 320×240 AVIs that play okay.

I uninstalled MS Works and installed a copy of Microsoft Office 2007 Home and Student. The office apps work very well to my surprise.

I’ve experienced two performance issues with the machine. One was temporary and occurred when I initially started up the machine. Dell had several software installs execute during the first startup. This slowed the machine while those completed. The second occurs when playing HD video such as you find on YouTube. The video and audio are very choppy during HD video playback. Other than that, the machine works very well.

The windows experience index is a 2.3 for this machine with the processor getting the 2.3 score. Video is 3.0 and 3.1 respectively for graphics and gaming graphics. Memory is 4.6 and disk is 5.9.

My greatest annoyance with the machine is all the glossy surfaces that show finger prints and dust very easily.

Good things…small packages…

I purchased this netbook after months of shopping around, I own a 17″ Dell laptop, but it was just to much to bring everywhere, and now that summer is here I like taking my motorcycle to work, making the 17″ even more daunting.

I decided on the 7990BK in black to match my Studio 1737, I’ve owned Dell computers for years and never had a problem so I felt this netbook would be a safe bet.

Opening the box to this computer is really impressive, its very small, and actually very well designed. I removed the computer from the packaging and got right to work, removing the Dell installed programs and add-ons. I gotta say this thing is pretty fast for a 1.66GHZ processor.

I installed a new copy of Office 2007, and connected my external HDD to copy my work files over. All in all I’m very impressed with this machine, and it took alot to get it to choke up, but it never stopped, I put it through some tough testing last night and it didn’t disappoint. With itunes, multiple excel created programs, 2 word docs, a desktop full of gadgets, websites, and movie playing in media player I was still able to play a few games of solitaire. This showed me I bought a pretty capable computer!

I do think Ill be upgrading to Windows 7 pro though, as Starter seems a bit lacking in features. I also think with another 1gb of RAM this computer will be a little powerhouse…especially with what I need it for.

I must mention the selling point of the keyboard being almost full size is reason enough to get this netbook! I have pretty big hands and most of the mini’s I’ve tried were an inconvenience to say the least. Dell however got it right with the keyboard on the Inspiron Mini, its literally like typing on your desktop keyboard…and that’s a good thing when you use your computer all day!

Also the battery life is quite impressive. To put it into perspective, I fully charged it after getting it delivered…unplugged it at 6pm, took it home and ran it all night long, at 1:30am it was still on, and when I took it to work it was at 10%…this was at 7am. I left the screen at full brightness and adjusted it for max performance, shutting the screen off after 20 minutes…I must say the battery life is top notch!

To wrap this up, Id say Dell hit it out of the park with there mini series Inspiron line, Ill continue to put this netbook to work, but with the addition of RAM, I think were gonna get along just fine. If you’re in the market for a mini…look no further.

Little powerhouse

I love the performance that is packed into this little computer. I would like for Windows Basic to allow custom desktops but I guess this helps the performance. I love its small size and feather weight. You can easily carry it in a pocketbook or large jacket pocket. We have had it for over a month and have found no issues so far. Also it was surprising that there was very little bloatware installed. My other Dell Laptop is 4 years old and works as good as when it was new. I hope this one lasts as long.

DiscountDell Inspiron IM1012-799CRD Mini 1012 10.1-Inch Netbook (Cherry Red)

A nice netbook for the usual coffee shop net surfing.

I was after a new netbook (owned an EEE 701)and thought I would go with the Dell this time around.

I found the Dell the most attractive package in early 2010 for the follwoing reasons:

1. comes with the new Atom 450 (should be a little more nergy efficient)

2. the 6-cell battery gives me more air time than the 3-cells batteries in so many other netbooks.

3. the keyboard is a pleasure to type on quickly.

4. the case is not only pretty but sturdy. No noticable flexing of any kind under pressure.

5. the screen is nice, colors vibrant.

6. touchpad is of a nice and usable size.

I’ve been using the Mini now for a couple of days and I’m not disappointed. I use it for light web surfing, emails, and typing (the classic core apps of a netbook). In addition, I use it for streaming music under my Zune subscription.

My expectations are met. Windows Starter only seems a bit of a bottleneck in terms of included (or lacking) features compared to Home or Professional. I couldn’t figure out how to back up the Mini via a mapped network drive and as it stands, it must be a missing (or blocked) feature due to Windows 7 Starter Edition. Upgrading seems the better choice if one really wants to use the Mini for sharing and streaming at home.

Mini DVI To Projector Problems

am quiet confused about the setup of the Mac Mini with the Optoma projector as it is not working for me. I have tried to connect them, but I am not able to perform that, so, if anyone is having the solution for that, then please provide that to me. Projector is not showing me signal. As my laptop is having the Display Panel which computer infact sees the Optoma HD72 as a secondary display. If anyone is having the details for that, then please provide that to me.

Re: Mini DVI To Projector Problems
Hello, I think you must need to read first the setting for your Projector connection with the Mac Mini. If you read the manualprovided with the Projector then you will able to get the solution for your problem. So, just make use of the manual and after that you will able to get the solution for your problem. It is just needed to perform the step by step use and then you will able to get the solution.

Re: Mini DVI To Projector Problems
Hello, I think you are getting the problem due to the wrong setting which you are performing. So, simply make use of the setting which are provided with your Projector and then try to do that. I also want to know the setting which you are currently trying to perform. So, just reply me with the settings which you are currently performing. So, just make use of the settings which you are given in the manual and get solved for your problem.

Re: Mini DVI To Projector Problems
Hello, I think you are having the problem due to the long cable. You need to shorten that. It is not the final solution, but you can simply make use of that and then get whether the problem is of thedrive or not. Sometimes due to the sync drive level such kind of problem occur. If the problem is that then you can simply get the VGA Signal amp/booster as a solution for your connection problem. So, simply check out that and then get the solution for your problem.

Re: Mini DVI To Projector Problems
Hello, I think the problem which you are getting is of the VGA cable. As I have change my DDMI with DVI-to-HDMI (female) adapter and then come to know that the projector is giving signal. So, if you want to solve your problem, then after performing that simply use the settings below:
Connect the mini-DVI port to the mini-DVI to DVI adapter.
Then that adapter will need to connect with the DVI to HDMI adapter.
This adapter will be needed to connect with the HDMI Cable.
After that simply connect that to the HDMI input on projector.
Done.
These setting are working for me. So, just use that and get solved the problem.

I was given a projector (toshiba tlp-s30) but i cant quite get it to work with my laptop, its on xp. When the laptop is off and i plug in the connection for the projector (which is on) and i start the computer, i get the opening images of windows through the projector, but when it gets to the windows log in screen, the projector screen says theres no signal coming through. i cant see an option in windows to change the output for the laptop. where am i going wrong?
when the laptop is switched on, the projector doesnt pick up a signal. the laptops kinda old, it doesnt have a switch for putting on the projector.

The laptop should be up and running before you connect the projector. Most laptops have a quick key to toggle the projector on and off.

Internet Connection and Wireless Networking Technology

An internet connection is essential in a computer system. It enables one to search for information, communicate with friends and family, and share personal files and documents to other users. It also provides entertainment through online games and social networking sites. Because of the continuous expansion of internet use, Information Technology (IT) specialists continue to create innovative ways to provide internet access to every computer owner.

A computer unit is connected to the internet by an Internet Service Provider (ISP). The ISP gives an ISP number which serves as a gateway to the internet. ISP numbers vary for every computer unit connected to the internet. Usually, ISPs require monthly fees in maintaining internet connection.

ISPs provide three types of internet connection: dial-up, broadband, and WLAN. The dial-up connection is the oldest service system of ISPs. This utilizes a dial-up modem that is connected to a standard telephone line. Older computer models come with a pre-installed dial-up modem. To establish a dial-up connection, one must dial the ISP number in the telephone line to be able to connect to the internet. Dial-up connection is the cheapest and slowest service system offered by ISPs.

Broadband connections utilize Digital Subscriber Lines (DSL) and cable modems which connect a computer system to the internet. It is a kind of high-speed internet connection which enables you to browse webpages and download files faster than a dial-up connection. DSLs and cable modems give you access to the internet at all times. However, a new kind of connection is now provided by ISPs with the invention of wireless networking boston, Massachusetts provides IT solutions for connection problems).

In wireless networking boston ISPs generate internet connection using radio waves and microwaves. Wireless local area networking (WLAN) cards and wireless routers are used in linking computer systems for file sharing, as well as in connecting computers to the internet. WLAN is typically known as “Wi-Fi”. Recently, public transportations and establishments have started offering Wi-Fi internet connection for various portable devices like PDAs and laptops.

In the invention of wireless networking boston network and information technology landscape will continue to evolve. IT specialists continue to find innovative ways on how to connect computer systems anytime, anywhere in the world.

How can I set up my sister’s laptop to work on my wireless internet connection?

I have a netopia wireless network card and when I insert it into her laptop, no wireless network connection icon comes up.
Please help!! If you need any other info, just ask and I will provide it.

It depends a lot, but here’s the basic requirements and some information to get you going in the right direction. You’ll need:

1) a wireless router that is already set up and functioning
2) physically insert / install the wireless card
3) either a driver will load automatically for it, or (better option) if you have the drives on floppy / CD etc. install those drivers
4) if the wireless router is “open” i.e. does not use encryption and the ssid (wireless network unique identifier for your network) has “broadcast” enabled, you should be able to get onto it immediately, though you might have to select the network if more than one is detected
5) if “broadcast” is disabled, you’ll need to manually enter the SSID in your sisters laptop once you have the wireless icon in the system tray in the lower right hand corner. Disabling broadcast “hides” the SSID so you just have to know it and tell the computer what it is the first time. (If you don’t know any of this at all, you’ll need to call a friend. Full details are out of scope for this response and forum.)
6) if WEP (Wireless Encryption Protocol) security is enabled, you’ll need to enter the WEP key you generated upon setup of the router, and select the right channel. Follow similar procedure if WPA was used, you’ll need to consult your documentation for that since I’m not as familiar with it.

Once the ssid is set up and WEP key entered (if required), you should be able to get onto the wireless network. It might be a good idea to reboot your PC after you set it up the first time.

Be patient and persistent, and don’t be afraid to read the documentation. The instructions I have seen for my Linksys wireless router for example were pretty good and clear.

Good luck!

WRAPUP 3-Toshiba leads Japan chips rebound, outlook cautious

By Sachi Izumi

TOKYO, July 29 (Reuters) – Japanese chipmaker earnings beat expectations on Thursday thanks to booming chip demand but the strong yen, the uncertain outlook in Europe and the prospect of a new chip glut remain a worry for Toshiba (6502.T) and its peers.[toshiba laptop battery]

A strong semiconductor business also pushed up Fujitsu’s (6702.T) April-June profits, prompting it to hike its first-half operating profit guidance by 40 percent. The world’s No. 3 IT services vendor, however, kept its annual outlook unchanged on European woes.

Toshiba (6502.T), its bigger rival Samsung Electronics (005930.KS), and other NAND-type flash memory makers are benefiting from soaring demand for chips used in mobile phones and digital cameras.

They are also gaining from tight supply and stable prices since last year’s severe sector downturn forced many chipmakers to slash output or go under and NAND-clad gadgets like Apple Inc’s (AAPL.O) iPhone and iPad surge in popularity.

GLUT?

But some analysts warn the sector, whose history is marked by volatile cycles of shortages and oversupplies, is heading to another supply glut as companies ramp up investments.

Toshiba recently started constructing its latest chip plant.

“You have to watch and see if demand holds up,” said Hiroaki Osakabe, strategist at Chibagin Asset Management in Tokyo.[toshiba PA3399U-2BRS battery]

“There’s going to be a lot of investment by makers and there’s the chance of oversupply. But the overall sector isn’t in that bad of a shape right now.”

Elpida Memory (6665.T), a maker of dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chips, was buoyed by strong PC shipments, while strong demand for analog chips and microcontrollers used for vehicles and electronics helped Renesas Electronics (6723.T).

Renesas, the world’s fifth-largest chipmaker created in April through a merger of Renesas Technology and NEC Electronics, still made a quarterly loss on merger costs and other expenses.

Toshiba, the world’s No. 3 chipmaker overall, posted its highest ever first quarter operating profit of 29.5 billion yen ($337.2 million), beating an average forecast of 24.2 billion yen from three analysts polled by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

To boost growth, it has been focusing on emerging areas such as smart grids and lithium-ion batteries besides its traditional chip and nuclear power businesses.

Toshiba retained its full-year outlook for a doubling of operating profit to 250 billion yen, near consensus of 256 billion yen, citing weak economies in the United States and Europe.

“Leading indicators suggest economies in the United States and Europe may slow down in the second half, and with the current situation in the Europe, the outlook is unclear,” Toshiba senior executive vice president Fumio Muraoka said in a briefing.

“But the outlook is unclear in any age, and we just have to make right decisions and do what we can do to improve earnings. We can’t blame the business environment.”

The economic uncertainty is also weighing on Korean chipmakers Samsung and Hynix Semiconductor (000660.KS). [ID:nLDE6660GU][ID:nTOE66J05B]

Research firm iSuppli said this month an oversupply of chips used for removable memory cards and USB drives helped global revenue from NAND shipments fall 6.5 percent in April-June, but said the sector was set to return to growth in the next five quarters.

“The prices of NAND flash memory have really recovered from their lows, and now for a while they’re likely to drift sideways,” said Chibagin Asset’s Osakabe.

“Toshiba is a bit weak in terms of household electronics but as long as demand for NAND flash memory remains good and prices are stable, Toshiba won’t do that badly.”

Renesas expects a 7 billion yen operating profit for the year to March, bigger than a consensus of 4.3 billion yen from a poll of eight analysts. This is the first time the company issued a profit outlook.

Aiming to slash costs by 110 billion yen in next three years, Renesas announced it would axe around 8 percent of group workforce and outsource some production to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (2330.TW) and U.S.-based Global Foundries Inc.

Elpida, which trails Samsung and Hynix in the DRAM market, did not provide full-year outlook, but analysts on average see a 124 billion yen profit, marking a jump of almost five times from a year ago.

Elpida reported April-June operating profit of 44.4 billion yen, versus a consensus for 40.2 billion yen.

Fujitsu’s quarterly earnings returned to an operating profit of 10 billion yen, beating market expectations. Its IT segment improved in profits on lower costs, but the company said demand for IT services had not fully recovered.[TOSHIBA PA3399U-1BAS battery]

Fujitsu, which compete with IBM (IBM.N) and Hewlett-Packard (HPQ.N), kept its operating profit forecast at 185 billion yen for the year to March, saying the European outlook is unclear and a spending sqeeze by the British government is also hurting. Dell 924 Printer

Dell 924 PrinterDell 924 Printer
Dell 924 Printer

Are there such things as Cheap Ink Cartridges?

It often comes as a bit of a shock to people when they go to buy a replacement printer cartridge and find that the price rivals that of the original printer itself. This is one of those open secrets in the printer industry. Every printer requires its own type of printer ink, and when you own a printer you are going to need to keep buying ink for it. Manufacturers are keen to entice customers towards their own brand of printer because in a way it is like getting customers to sign contracts for the ink. They can keep the printers at low prices because it is the ongoing costs of the printer ink where they will make their money over the long term.

If you are new to the world of printers and are looking to buy one for the first time, the best thing to do is choose one based on the price of the replacement cartridges. The printer will often come with a free ink cartridge but before you buy, take a moment to find out online or ask in the shop itself how much a solo cartridge is. Compare this price to others to find out if you have got a good deal. One word of warning however is in order to make accurate comparisons you need to compare the yield price. Cartridges often contain different volumes of ink and require different amounts to print per page. That means one cartridge may be cheaper than another but may only print half the number of pages. By comparing the yield price you can get a clear comparison between products.

This is all good advice, but it doesn’t really help those who have already bought their printer and are faced with high ongoing ink charges. What can these people do to reduce their bill? The first thing to do is print economically. That means only printing in black and white if possible, avoiding printing anything that doesn’t absolutely have to be printed and never printing from websites. Colour ink is more expensive than black ink so you will save money if you only have to regularly replace the black cartridge in the printer. Websites are often not set up to print well so when you print from them all the adverts are printed (which are often in colour) and often several pages comes out when you only really wanted the first section. Avoid doing this – websites will always be there for reference so you don’t need to print from them anyway. Never print emails either, this is extremely wasteful. Emails can be forwarded on most of the time if someone needs to see them.

In terms of finding cheap printer cartridges, the web is the best place to buy from. Here there are often discounts available and lower prices than those found on the high street. With fewer overheads, online shops can keep their prices lower and because they have a wider audience too they can afford to take smaller profits per item sold. This is all good news for the customer. Buying online comes with additional benefits too such as delivery to your door which saves a trip out in the car to your local computer supply store. Sometimes there are discounts on buying in bulk and it is sometimes even possible to buy cartridges that cannot be sold in shops either because there is damage to the box or the box is missing entirely. These are sold at a fraction of the price of regular products.

It is possible to find yourself some cheap ink cartridges, you just need to know where to look. Whether it is cheap hp ink cartridges you are looking for or a dell 924 ink cartridge you should always begin your search online.
